Scribe

Biography

Black’s unseen hand

Scribe serves Amadeus of the Green Stretch as his intelligence chief and closest administrative aide. She brings him reports, manages an extensive network of agents, and helps turn information into political and military action. Her first appearance is on a battlefield after the fighting has ended, quietly delivering a report to Black; the scene captures her preference for useful work over spectacle. She is regarded as an honorary Calamity, though she remains less publicly famous than the other members of the circle. (Chapters 1, 3, 15, 51)

An ally and wary teacher to Catherine

Scribe repeatedly crosses paths with Catherine as she enters the Legions and begins operating beyond Black’s direct oversight. Scribe’s Name lets her approach without being noticed, and her intelligence network gives her reach across armies and courts. She helps arrange Catherine’s early needs, warns Black about the changing political landscape, and later assists Catherine’s intelligence work. Their relationship remains wary: Catherine knows Scribe is capable of withholding truths, while Scribe’s loyalties are rooted in a longer history with Amadeus and the Empire. (Chapters 3, 15, 20–21, 65, 67, 112, 176, 215)

Eudokia and the Black Queen

During the civil war and the campaign against the Dead King, Scribe’s network and judgment become important to Catherine’s coalition. Catherine eventually recruits her into the adjunct secretariat, giving her a formal place in Callow’s administration. Scribe continues to gather intelligence, identify enemy plans, and report developments directly to Catherine’s war councils. Her personal name is given as Eudokia, although the narration explicitly leaves open whether that is her true name. Her last direct scenes show her still working beside Catherine and bringing news from Praes and the front. (Chapters 309, 311, 378–380, 387–389, 391, 412, 420, 422, 426–427, 431–432)

Appearance and personality

Scribe is a plain-faced woman with ink-stained hands. She is quiet, precise, and difficult to observe; even people actively watching her find their attention sliding away. Her reserve masks an incisive political mind and a dry sense of humor. (Chapters 1, 21, 311, 379, 412)

Abilities

Scribe is a Named, and her aspect is identified as Fade, though she herself cautions that the name may be false. It allows her to slip past notice and makes her unusually difficult to watch. Her greatest demonstrated reach is institutional rather than destructive: she commands agents, cultivates informants, and uses the Eyes and other networks to gather intelligence across borders. The story does not describe a formal progression beyond this aspect. (Chapters 3, 15, 21, 311, 391)

Relationships

  • Dread Empress Malicia: A rival intelligence chief whose network and political goals intersect with Scribe’s. (Chapters 116, 311–312, 408–410)
