Rozala Malanza
Biography
Aequitan’s commander
Rozala Malanza rises from the ruling line of Aequitan into the leadership of Procer’s northern crusade. She is both a princess and a professional commander, with a reputation for cavalry tactics and a willingness to remain in the thick of battle. Catherine first encounters her through the crusader war, where Rozala commands a large force against Callow. Their first clashes establish her as a disciplined adversary: she can absorb losses, keep her army functioning, and recognize when political constraints limit her choices. (Chapters 170–171, 175–176, 255)
After the Battle of the Camps, Rozala becomes a central figure in the negotiations between Callow and the crusaders. She argues for her soldiers’ interests, participates in the drafting of terms, and continues to oppose Catherine when their goals remain incompatible. Their relationship is not friendly, but it becomes frank and workable; Rozala later speaks for the health of her army in coalition councils and remains willing to treat with Catherine directly. (Chapters 264–266, 290–291, 315, 321, 328)
First Princess and wartime leader
As the Dead King’s invasion reshapes Procer, Rozala’s command becomes central to the defence of Cleves and the wider Grand Alliance. She takes part in war councils, makes decisions about where to commit soldiers, and continues to fight from the front when the campaign turns desperate. The narrative depicts her rallying troops and returning to battle despite a head wound. She later holds the First Princess’s authority and speaks for Procer in the alliance’s final strategic meetings. (Chapters 340, 369, 420, 450, 463, 465, 471)
Appearance and personality
Rozala is a tall, dark-haired, dark-eyed Arlesite, known for her striking appearance and for the sword at her side. She is a forceful, pragmatic commander who speaks plainly about the exhaustion and limits of her army. Her readiness to stay mounted and return to battle reflects a personal courage that supports her authority with the soldiers she leads. (Chapters 291, 315, 420, 465)
