Roland de Beaumarais
Roland de Beaumarais, the Rogue Sorcerer, is a hero whose courtesy and social ease make him unusual among the Chosen who serve alongside Catherine. He is a versatile mage rather than a front-line champion, and his aspect lets him identify and seize sorcerous workings. That combination makes him valuable to the Grand Alliance: he can study unfamiliar magic, help contain dangerous artifacts, and work with Masego on questions few other characters can answer. (Chapters 170, 271, 284, 342, and 435)
Biography
A hero who prefers questions to posturing
Roland first appears as a senior hero and magical adviser in the Proceran coalition. He works with Princess Rozala Malanza on battle planning and takes a leading role among the wizard cadres. Catherine initially knows little about him beyond his reputation as a careful sorcerer, but she soon finds that he is polite, curious, and willing to speak with her even when the political situation makes cooperation uncomfortable. He is not naïve about her choices; he simply prefers to judge a working alliance by what it can accomplish. (Chapters 170, 174, and 271)
During the campaigns around Iserre and the Twilight Ways, Roland repeatedly contributes specialist knowledge and magic. He helps investigate the crowns and the strange workings around them, recognizes when magic has been confiscated, and argues against decisions that would sacrifice an ally merely because they are expedient. When Kairos betrays the coalition, Roland is badly hurt but survives, returning to the group with the information needed to understand what happened. (Chapters 278–289)
Scholar, collaborator, and wartime mage
Roland becomes one of the heroes most comfortable working with Catherine’s circle. He develops a friendly relationship with the Woe, helps Masego test theories about magic, and turns up to assist with problems from dangerous objects to the rules of the Truce and Terms. His social skill does not make him a passive mediator: when heroes threaten to let pride turn a disagreement into a fight, he steps between them and tries to prevent the conflict from worsening. (Chapters 309, 321–322, 341–343, and 349)
In the war against the Dead King, Roland’s magic supports both the army and its research. He uses a sorcerous eye to inspect distant threats, patches wounded allies, and confiscates hostile workings when unfamiliar magic threatens the battlefield. During the final assault on Keter, his fire and wind sorcery help the Grand Alliance break through the defenses. His last direct scenes show him exhausted but still reporting battlefield losses and urging Catherine to withdraw when continued fighting would only waste lives. (Chapters 383–387, 393, 406, 435, and 468–471)
Appearance and personality
Roland is a short, boyish-looking man with a still-tanned face, usually wearing a long leather coat over clothes suited to travel. He is genteel, patient, and socially perceptive, often serving as the voice of reason in heated conversations. He is also willing to act decisively when a magical threat must be contained. (Chapters 170, 342–343, and 471)
Abilities and Name
Roland’s aspect Confiscate, described as part of his Choosing, lets him recognize sorcery that can be seized and take control of a magical working or the power invested in it. At Thalassina, he identifies Wekesa’s spell as sorcery he can confiscate; later he neutralizes a dangerous magical stone by removing its power. The aspect depends on the target being sorcerous and does not make Roland a universal counter to every supernatural ability. (Chapters 284 and 435)
He also practices versatile sorcery, including fire and wind workings, and uses prepared spells and tools to investigate threats at a distance. His strengths are breadth, analysis, and support rather than absorbing punishment in the front line. The text does not establish a later Name transition or a complete list of his aspects. (Chapters 266, 282, 383, and 470)
Relationships
-
Catherine Foundling: A friendly and practical ally. Roland is comfortable speaking frankly with her and helps her manage magical and political problems, while she trusts his judgement enough to assign him important research and battlefield duties. (Chapters 342, 349, and 383–384)
-
Masego the Hierophant: A fellow scholar and frequent collaborator. They work together on unfamiliar magical principles and share specialized expertise. (Chapters 341, 393, and 442–449)
-
The Grand Alliance’s heroes: Roland serves alongside the Pilgrim, Saint, White Knight, and other Chosen, often trying to prevent friction from becoming a fight. (Chapters 271, 284–289, and 389)
Items
Roland uses sorcerous tools and artifacts, including a casting rod, but the story does not establish a uniquely named personal item. (Chapters 281 and 393)
