Marshal Ranker

Ranker is a goblin commander whose planning and discipline help shape the modern Legions of Terror. She joins Amadeus’ early rebellion with the warriors of her tribe, rises through the Legion system, and becomes one of Praes’ three Marshals. Her connection to the Calamities is built on long service and shared campaigns, while her command style treats logistics, adaptation, and survival as inseparable from battlefield courage. (Chapters 23, 47, 103, and 176)

Biography

The Hungry Dog Matron joins the Legions

Ranker first appears advising Amadeus on the practical limits of an early campaign: commanders will not risk a real fight until their allies arrive, and a High Lord’s orders shape what his troops can do. She brings the Hungry Dog tribe into Amadeus’ rebellion, taking the adults to war while sending the children to other tribes. The decision reflects the severity of her bet on Amadeus and the cost she is willing to accept to change Praes. (Chapters 23, 47, and 102)

Ranker becomes a marshal through both force of will and institutional skill. Her damaged left hand, left unhealed after she kept it in a fire longer than the other competitors, becomes the mark behind “Blackhands.” She helped draft Legion regulations and built a command culture that values preparation and clear decision-making. When Catherine meets her, Ranker is already a senior commander: blunt, suspicious of sentiment, and willing to laugh at Catherine’s attempt to rule through fear. (Chapters 102–103)

The Marshal and field commander

Ranker’s Fourth fights across the campaigns in Callow and Arcadia. In the battle of Dormer, she interprets the fae’s tactics, moves her troops to reinforce endangered fronts, and helps keep the army from collapsing while the Hellgate crisis unfolds. Her command is practical rather than theatrical: she adjusts to incomplete reports, coordinates with other commanders, and treats keeping soldiers alive as the condition for any later victory. (Chapters 107, 120, 122, and 142)

She also provides a counterweight to Catherine’s impulsive choices. The Queen can rely on Ranker’s experience, but she cannot assume the Marshal will agree with every order or prioritize Catherine’s personal attachments. Ranker’s advice is grounded in the needs of the army and the political structure of Praes. Her long-standing friendship with Amadeus gives her a separate source of loyalty, and the two can speak frankly about strategy and the future of their campaigns. (Chapters 130, 176, and 215)

Later status

During the later Praesi conflict, Ranker’s status becomes uncertain. Catherine hears that she may be dead, but the story does not show a death scene or establish the circumstances. The article therefore records her as reported possibly dead rather than assigning a definite death date. (Chapter 324)

Appearance and personality

Ranker is a small, elderly goblin woman with yellow eyes, deeply wrinkled brown-green skin, and a blackened, twisted left hand. She is blunt, dryly humorous, and difficult to intimidate. Her battlefield decisions are shaped by a commander’s attention to terrain, supply, unit cohesion, and the limits of what exhausted troops can do. (Chapters 23, 103, 107, and 176)

Abilities and command

Ranker is an exceptional military planner and field commander rather than a sorcerer or Named combatant. She coordinates Legions, scouts, siege weapons, and allied forces, adapting plans when the available information changes. The text emphasizes her experience and command judgement; it does not establish supernatural abilities or a personal Name. (Chapters 107, 120, 122, and 142)

Relationships

  • Amadeus of the Green Stretch: Long-time ally and friend. Ranker joins his rebellion with her tribe and remains one of the senior commanders he trusts with major campaigns. (Chapters 23, 47, 176, and 215)

  • Catherine Foundling: A practical, sometimes wary partner in command. Ranker advises Catherine on military decisions and expects her to respect the consequences of giving orders. (Chapters 103, 118, and 130)

  • Juniper: A fellow Legion commander who coordinates with Ranker across campaigns. Their working relationship depends on clear chains of command and an understanding of each other’s strengths. (Chapters 120, 130, and 142)

Items

Her blackened hand is the source of her “Blackhands” sobriquet; the text does not identify a separate named item associated with her.
