Kilian

Kilian is a Callowan army mage whose expertise and field command make her an essential member of Catherine Foundling’s forces. She is practical, intellectually curious, and willing to challenge Catherine when military duty or their personal relationship makes silence easier. Her career grows from a lieutenant in Rat Company to Senior Mage and later Special Tribune, while her sorcery remains the product of training and heritage rather than a Named Role.

Biography

From Rat Company to Senior Mage

Kilian first appears as a red-haired lieutenant in Rat Company, contributing to the Fifteenth’s reconnaissance and early assaults. When Catherine’s outnumbered soldiers fight for a captured fort, Kilian uses her mages to break obstacles and hold the line, then takes responsibility for a dangerous melee so Catherine can keep the company moving. Her decisions show both a soldier’s confidence in her people and a willingness to protect the commander whose judgment she is still learning to trust. (Chapters 15, 17–18, and 22–28)

As Catherine’s army expands, Kilian’s command shifts toward magic. By the time she is introduced as Senior Mage, she oversees the Fifteenth’s mage operations and brings technical knowledge to the staff’s plans. She explains the theory behind spells, coordinates fire and lightning in battle, and uses scrying to track enemy patrols. When Catherine needs to understand the limits of her fae title and aspects, Kilian provides a clear-eyed account of how magic and Names interact, including risks Catherine would rather ignore. (Chapters 33, 36–40, 66–70, 82–84, and 117)

A relationship under strain

Kilian and Catherine become lovers while serving in the same chain of command. Their intimacy begins in the ordinary rhythms of camp and work, but the imbalance in rank and Catherine’s growing willingness to make extreme compromises complicate it. Kilian is not content to be managed as a subordinate or soothed like a soldier: when Catherine tries to turn their closeness into another order, Kilian insists that she is speaking as the Squire and that this role has no place in their conversation. Her boundary forces Catherine to confront how easily the habits of command can crowd out genuine regard. (Chapters 46, 98, and 136–37)

After the Battle of Liesse, the two share another quiet conversation. Kilian recognizes that Catherine’s choice may have saved a city, but asks whether it would have been worth the price if she had died. Their exchange leaves their affection intact while making their different moral limits impossible to overlook. Later, when they meet again after years apart, Kilian is still a senior mage of the Army of Callow. Their reunion is cautious rather than a simple restoration of the old relationship; both have grown into lives that can no longer be folded back into their earlier intimacy. (Chapters 236, 459, and 472)

Service in the Army of Callow

Kilian continues to serve as a senior specialist beyond the Fifteenth’s early campaigns. She brings a large mage contingent to Catherine’s army and is trusted to provide wards and scrying support for major operations. Her authority is professional as well as personal: commanders rely on her judgment about magical threats, while Catherine treats her as someone whose advice can shape the outcome of a campaign. (Chapters 140, 329, and 459)

Appearance and personality

Kilian is a pale, red-haired woman with hazel eyes and a striking appearance partly attributed to her quarter-fae heritage. Her hair can flare with magical energy when she draws too deeply on sorcery. She dresses for service and is frequently seen in armour or working clothes rather than court finery. (Chapters 26, 45, and 115)

Kilian is direct, technically minded, and dryly humorous. She is comfortable questioning Catherine’s plans, but her bluntness comes from responsibility rather than a desire to undermine command. She values both expertise and autonomy, and expects her personal boundaries to be respected even when she remains loyal to the army. (Chapters 25, 28, 98, and 137)

Abilities and skills

Kilian is a trained sorceress and a capable battlefield commander. Her demonstrated work includes fireballs, lightning, wards, scrying, and explaining the theory behind magical effects. She can coordinate mage lines under pressure and assess supernatural threats, but her power is presented as learned sorcery supported by her heritage, not as an Aspect or Named ability. (Chapters 23–24, 36–40, 67, 82, and 117)

Relationships

  • Catherine Foundling: Kilian begins as one of Catherine’s officers and becomes her lover. Their relationship is shaped by Catherine’s rank and wartime compromises; Kilian’s refusal to be treated as a subordinate forces Catherine to recognize how her command habits affect those closest to her. They part, and their later reunion is affectionate but restrained by the lives each has built since. (Chapters 46, 98, 137, 236, 459, and 472)

  • Masego: Kilian is part of the army’s small circle of senior magic practitioners and helps Catherine interpret magical and Named phenomena. Her working relationship with him is collegial, grounded in their shared expertise. (Chapters 78, 82, and 117)

  • The Fifteenth Legion and Army of Callow: Kilian’s mage command develops alongside the army. Her decisions in the field support its survival, and later her Special Tribune role lets her bring specialized mage forces to the wider campaign. (Chapters 18, 28, 66, and 329)

Items

No distinct recurring personal item is associated with Kilian; her weapons, armour, and magical materials serve her ordinary military and sorcerous work. (Chapters 18, 23–24, and 46)
