Zong Ming Yan
Biography
Documented arc
Zong Ming Yan first encountered Zuo Mo after a Dong Qi disciple violated Dong Fu's prohibition on fighting. He challenged Yu Bai's apparently unequal intervention, but once shown that Zuo Mo was a protected ling plant farmer, he accepted the ruling and abandoned his defeated sectmate as useless, displaying both sect pride and contempt for weakness. (Chapters 37–45)
As Zuo Mei Tian's favored disciple and Dong Qi Sword Sect's first seat, Zong Ming Yan entered the Sword Test Conference among Dong Fu's recognized young experts. Seeing Wei Sheng and Gu Rong Ping fight at a level above his own darkened his mood, and when Yu Bai was already occupied, he entered Zuo Mo's expanding formation in search of another opponent. (Chapters 91, 119, 134–142)
Zong Ming Yan used the Seven Plum Sword to probe the formation rather than blindly exhaust himself. He dismissed its lesser attacks with One Cut Plum, challenged Chang Heng, and launched the penetrating Three Play toward what he believed was the formation's weak point while Paired Sparrow Flying defended his body from converging rings of light. (Chapters 142–149)
Zuo Mo diverted the Three Play sword essences and trapped Zong Ming Yan with a contracting net of tranquil blue fire. The flames overwhelmed his damaged ling armor and left him burned black and unconscious; rescue prevented immediate death, but reports after the conference described him as seriously wounded and Dong Qi Sword Sect as deeply hostile toward Zuo Mo. (Chapters 149–157)
Appearance and personality
Zong Ming Yan is a cold, sharp young man whose composure and sword presence mark him as an elite disciple. He is proud and readily contemptuous, yet he follows an austere idea of honorable combat: he refuses to interfere with Yu Bai's existing duel, studies an unfamiliar formation before committing, and does not carry a personal grudge merely because a weak sectmate lost.
Abilities and cultivation
Zong Ming Yan practices Dong Qi Sword Sect's Plum Cutting Sword Scripture with the Seven Plum Sword. One Cut Plum delivers a forceful direct strike; Three Play turns three plum blossoms into spiraling sword essences with exceptional penetration; Paired Sparrow Flying uses two blossoms as a close defense. His rudimentary formation knowledge helps him search for a cover door, but he misidentifies the decisive target and cannot prevent layered restraint and fire formations from separating him from his sword energies.
