Zhang Hao

Biography

Documented arc

Zhang Hao leads the Black Wind Bandits into the Endless Ocean while pursuing three people believed to have emptied a secret realm. He uses the promise of wealth to revive his exhausted followers' fighting spirit. Though he looks blunt and hot-tempered, his long survival as a wandering bandit chief rests on caution, mobility, and an ability to keep his small veteran group united. (Chapter 183)

When the bandits encounter Zuo Mo carrying the Wu Kong Flag, Zhang Hao weighs sect retaliation, Zuo Han's desire for revenge, his followers' loyalty, and the secret realm's value before choosing battle. He first sends five zhuji to test for life-saving talismans, but their deaths expose Zuo Mo's formations and leave Zhang Hao committed to taking Desolate Wood Reef rather than retreating in disgrace. (Chapters 184–186)

Zhang Hao first orders a distant mass bombardment, then recognizes that it cannot break the island's formation and leads the charge inside. He presses Zuo Mo with his heavy sword and Heart Turn Sword Essence, correctly denying a formation expert time to prepare, but fails to realize that Zuo Mo is placing formation disks while controlling the Wu Kong Flag's sword energies. (Chapters 187–189)

His full-power Open Mountain strike collides with Yang Fiendish Hard Lightning and leaves both combatants wounded. Zhang Hao tries to withdraw, but the prepared formations and the formation spirit's attacks exhaust his last strength. As he finally breaks free, an ice-dragon sword essence cuts him in two; Zuo Mo stores the corpse and later claims his valuables. (Chapters 190–193)

Appearance and personality

Zhang Hao is a large man with bell-sized eyes, a fierce gaze, and an explosive temper. He is greedy and brutal, but neither simple nor careless: he can rouse his followers, balance the political consequences of a raid, test an opponent before committing his strongest people, and change tactics when brute force fails. (Chapters 183–187)

Abilities and cultivation

He is an experienced ningmai fighter whose strength would place him among Sky Moon Jie's experts despite his low public profile. His Mountain Opener Sword Scripture has reached Heart Turn Sword Essence, and its first move, Open Mountain, concentrates his full power into a mountain-breaking strike. His broad heavy sword can produce blows described as weighing thirty thousand catties, yet can also circle defensively as a nimble curtain of red light. (Chapters 187–190)

His main limitation is tactical context rather than a lack of power. The Black Wind Bandits are optimized for mobile robbery, not attacking fortified formations, and Zhang Hao's confidence in a direct cultivation advantage leaves him vulnerable to Zuo Mo's multitasking and prepared formation disks. Severe wounds then prevent him from answering the final sword essence. (Chapters 187–191)

Relationships

Zuo Han is an old subordinate of ten years whose injury and desire for revenge influence Zhang Hao's decision to fight. Wei Rong and the other bandits fear him but also respond to his ability to create solidarity and greed-driven morale. Zuo Mo becomes his final opponent, while Wei Sheng is the expert whose earlier victory over the bandits taught Zhang Hao to respect Wu Kong Sword Sect. (Chapters 183–185, 187–191)

Items

His fourth-grade heavy flying sword is carved with the name Mountain Opener and serves both offensive and defensive roles. He also owns the fourth-grade Shadowless cloak, which provides excellent concealment but no defense; because the bandits rarely need to flee, he does not wear it in his final battle. Zuo Mo takes these items, his dimensional rings, materials, and jingshi after his death. (Chapter 193)
