Yuan Li joins the visiting experts investigating the daytime stars and possible yaomo activity around Dong Fu. He is the group's most sensitive detector of energies and presences, but the heavy traffic through the city makes the hidden trail almost impossible to distinguish. (Chapters 71–72)

He confides that his own sect lacks capable younger disciples and may end with his generation, a concern Yun Xia tries to ease. The group continues searching in turns despite its lack of a strong central leader. (Chapter 71)

While Yuan Li is carrying out his turn in the search, hidden enemies ambush and kill him. His grey-green corpse is recovered, and the survivors recognize that their investigation has become a targeted struggle. Later references add no further personal history. (Chapters 75–77)
