Silly Bird

Silly Bird is Zuo Mo's longest-serving ling beast companion. First introduced as a second-grade female Grey-Beaked Goose, she carries an unconscious Zuo Mo home after his battle with Ling Ying Sect. His attempt to reward her with stone milk triggers the first of several transformations that eventually make her the strongest of the Little Ones and a phoenix-form combatant. Her growth repeatedly changes the group's prospects: her speed enables escapes that Zuo Mo could not otherwise manage, her phoenix flame defeats powerful enemies, and her protection helps the survivors endure ten years in the endless void.

Biography

From Grey-Beaked Goose to travelling companion

Silly Bird first appears after Zuo Mo regains consciousness at Wu Kong Sword Sect. She has exhausted herself carrying him back from the fight with Ling Ying Sect, so he gives her three drops of stone milk as compensation. The medicine is far beyond what an ordinary second-grade Grey-Beaked Goose can safely absorb, and she flies away in a frenzy. When she returns, the formerly ordinary bird has become larger, with snow-white feathers and a pure sky-blue beak. The transformed third-grade Blue-Beaked Snow Goose is valuable enough to draw an immediate purchase offer, but Zuo Mo refuses to sell her. (Chapters 102–103)

The transformation makes Silly Bird a swift and increasingly conspicuous mount. She carries Zuo Mo between Wu Kong Mountain, his residence, Dong Fu, and later destinations, while her habits establish a relationship that is more domestic than formal. She is proud, preens when admired, seeks snacks, and is selective about lingdan; she also rolls her eyes and honks when Zuo Mo sings badly. Their exchanges can be rough—he once strikes her head hard enough to leave her dizzy—but the narration increasingly presents her behavior as intelligent rather than that of an interchangeable beast. (Chapters 111, 128, 131, 157, 159, 163, 172)

After a separation, Silly Bird rushes into Zuo Mo, nudges him, and presses close, a reunion that visibly warms him. She then resumes carrying him, including on the journey to Desolate Wood Reef. By this point the narration explicitly says that Silly Bird and Lil Black, after living with him for half a year, are not merely a steed and a ling worm but are like friends. That bond explains why Zuo Mo later treats her disappearance as a personal crisis rather than the loss of useful property. (Chapters 167–169)

The grey-mud transformation in Little Mountain Jie

Within the group of small beings around Zuo Mo, Silly Bird assumes a leading position. When Lil Pagoda produces grey mud after refining talismans, she consumes large quantities of it. The substance, described as lying outside the five elements, causes a violent reaction: her feathers shake, grey threads of energy spread across her body, and a whirlwind seals her inside a grey cocoon. The cocoon then shoots away so quickly that even Zuo Mo's Thunder Flowing Light Wings cannot keep pace. He follows for hours before losing it, turning an accidental feeding into a prolonged search. (Chapters 264–265)

Zuo Mo refuses to abandon the search even when others would prioritize treasure or safety. He calls Silly Bird his first ling beast and recalls that she once carried him home, making the depth of his attachment explicit. Reports of an extraordinarily fast grey shadow draw him onward and entangle him with Clear Sky Sect cultivators and Huang Zhuo Guang. He ultimately finds Silly Bird asleep, snoring and drooling, inside a newly formed tiny secret realm. When he tries to seize her, she repeatedly slips away; Zheng Zhong judges that her speed now exceeds both his and Zuo Mo's by several times and makes her exceptionally difficult to defeat. The result of this evolution is not merely faster travel. Silly Bird returns like grey lightning and continues to lead the Little Ones, whose behavior gathers around her authority. She can peck Zuo Mo hard enough to break his grip despite his Great Day mo physique, and she detects a concealed Black Bat scout hidden among clouds before the others do. She then closes the distance at extreme speed and kills the third-grade bat with her long beak. These incidents turn the evasive speed revealed in the secret realm into a combat method combining perception, acceleration, and a direct piercing strike. (Chapters 283, 289, 320–321, 397)

Protector of the household and phoenix cultivation

Silly Bird's place in the household broadens as the Little Ones and A Gui become central to Zuo Mo's life. She initially avoids A Gui because of the latter's terrifying aura, but after A Gui is injured and the aura recedes, Silly Bird becomes notably attentive and even allows her to ride—an accommodation Zuo Mo himself does not receive. She stands beside A Gui and reacts visibly when A Gui is hurt. Zuo Mo, in turn, entrusts Silly Bird and Tenth Grade with watching the other Little Ones while he investigates the caves beneath Turtle Island. (Chapters 246, 277, 309, 320, 325, 454)

Her protective value becomes decisive during the group's encounter with the eighth-grade Clear Cloud Python. Silly Bird reacts first to the danger and leads the retreat. After Zuo Mo exhausts himself using the Archaic Wasteland Sacrificial Art, she catches him by the neck while he holds A Gui and carries both of them away, still outpacing Wei Sheng and Zong Ru and evading the blue attacks fired by ice breath beasts in the cloud river. The same expedition also establishes her limits: the group must flee the python, an ancient mist figure binds Silly Bird along with everyone else, and Ding Zhen's pressure leaves her trembling, claws dug into the ground, unable to reach Zuo Mo. Chun Yu Cheng later directs a more deliberate transformation. He identifies a persistent power inside Silly Bird that has continually strengthened her body beyond an ordinary Blue-Beaked Snow Goose, then immerses her in lava and earth fire containing shen power in an attempt at phoenix-like nirvana regeneration. She emerges with grand, bright-red feathers trailing threads of flame. Chun Yu Cheng cannot confirm a phoenix bloodline, but says the result is not much inferior to a phoenix and that her resilient body is stronger than many mo physiques. After rejecting numerous mo skills, she chooses Solitary Dance of the Great Dark Wheel Phoenix, a technique Pu Yao regards as supposedly impossible to cultivate. (Chapters 752, 762, 765)

Ancient ruins, the Central Plains, and the endless void

The phoenix-like evolution is tested in the ancient ruins. Silly Bird senses danger in the Mist Hall and releases red flames, then pecks the Mist Eye Tablet and persists when Zuo Mo and A Gui vanish into it. Against Tan Xu of Kun Lun, her beak penetrates defensive shen power and equipment, while her body endures a storm of thousands of sword energies. She then uses Phoenix Flame with the steps and wing rhythm of Solitary Dance of the Great Dark Wheel Phoenix to enclose him in a field just over one zhang across. The flame consumes his shen power and ultimately erases him completely. (Chapters 789–792, 800–804)

Zuo Mo subsequently carves the Coral Fire Perch from ancient Coral Wood for Silly Bird. Its fire formation and sun shen glyph allow the wood's dark-red flame to merge with her Phoenix Flame, increasing its power by at least half according to the chapter's assessment. With the perch and her mo skill, she is considered capable of fighting ancient wasteland beasts. In a later clash with Wu Zhen, however, a shen-glyph finger attack drives her back, and his technique cuts through her first line of flame; she answers by curving the divided fire into a circular restraining field, showing both adaptability and the continued ability of high-level opponents to check her attacks. During the catastrophe surrounding Kun Lun's Chief Elder, Zuo Mo expends himself protecting A Gui, Silly Bird, and the others. Seeing his white hair, Silly Bird wails and sheds tears as the narration recalls her formed intelligence and memories: counting jingshi beside him in youth, carrying him home unconscious, and his journey to find her. She had grown strong in the hope of guarding him as she once had at Wu Kong. Fire erupts around her, long ribbon-like tail feathers form, and her feathers become flame, marking the story's clearest phoenix transformation. Zuo Mo leads the remaining survivors into the endless void, with Silly Bird following. (Chapters 838, 851)

The transformation is essential to survival. The narration states that without Silly Bird's change, the Little Ones' advancement, and Qing Xiao, Zuo Mo and the group would have died in the endless void. Over the next ten years, the Little Ones take turns protecting the still-weakened Zuo Mo, with Silly Bird remaining the strongest even though high-grade materials force members of the group—including her—to spend time absorbing power or resting. Her phoenix fire also becomes one of the three shen fires Zuo Mo uses in forging. When he finally recovers, she is alive beside him, wiping away tears with her wings before kicking Black Gold for boasting at the wrong moment. (Chapters 852, 857–860, 874–877)

Appearance and personality

Silly Bird begins as a female second-grade Grey-Beaked Goose. Her first transformation produces a much larger third-grade Blue-Beaked Snow Goose with completely snow-white plumage and a pure sky-blue beak. Later chapters sometimes describe her in motion as a grey bird or a streak of grey lightning, but do not explain this color wording as a separate stable form. The fire-based treatment changes her appearance more clearly: her feathers become bright red and emit fine trails of flame. During the Central Plains catastrophe, she develops long, ribbon-like tail feathers, a body whose plumage appears made of fire, and sparks that fall as she flies. Her feathers are still described as deep red and fiery in her last documented scene. (Chapters 102–103, 276, 283, 321, 762, 851, 877)

Pride is her most persistent behavioral trait. Silly Bird preens, shows off, expects deference from the other Little Ones, and often ignores Zuo Mo when he calls. She is also a picky and enthusiastic eater, especially where lingdan are concerned. Yet the narration does not equate pride with recklessness: when she attacks the Mist Eye Tablet, Zuo Mo specifically reasons that she is proud but not rash and therefore must have sensed something. Her attachment is demonstrated through action long before her thoughts are narrated—returning to Zuo Mo, guarding companions, carrying the wounded, and watching for threats—and is made explicit only after her intelligence and memories are directly described during her phoenix transformation. She is capable of fear and distress. She avoids A Gui's early aura, flees dangers the group cannot defeat, trembles under Ding Zhen's pressure, and grieves when Zuo Mo appears to have sacrificed himself. These responses coexist with aggression rather than cancel it: she attacks when companions disappear, fights Tan Xu to the death, and helps contain Wu Zhen. Her personality is therefore best understood through the story's repeated contrast between imperious everyday conduct and dependable action when the household is in danger. Abilities and cultivation

Flight, perception, and physical attacks

Silly Bird's defining early ability is speed. After the grey-mud evolution, even Zuo Mo using Thunder Flowing Light Wings cannot catch her cocoon, and Zheng Zhong estimates that she is several times faster than either of them. She later carries Zuo Mo and A Gui while remaining ahead of accomplished cultivators and dodging blue attacks from the ice breath beasts in the cloud river. Her senses complement this mobility: she discovers a concealed Black Bat scout in clouds before the group does. In close combat she generally uses her beak as a piercing weapon, killing the bat and later punching through a Kun Lun cultivator's shen-powered defense and equipment. Resilient body and successive evolution

Her growth is driven by several distinct interventions rather than a stated conventional cultivation ladder. Stone milk changes a Grey-Beaked Goose into a Blue-Beaked Snow Goose; grey mud from Lil Pagoda produces a speed-centered transformation; and Chun Yu Cheng's high-grade earth-fire treatment draws out a phoenix-like constitution. He attributes the continuity between these stages to an unidentified power inside her that keeps strengthening her body. By the red-feathered stage, that body is described as exceptionally powerful, tougher than many mo physiques, and able to ignore numerous yao arts and spells. She survives Tan Xu's dense sword-flame attack, although stronger restraint and pressure techniques still affect her. (Chapters 102–103, 264–276, 752, 762, 800–803)

Phoenix Flame and Solitary Dance of the Great Dark Wheel Phoenix

Phoenix Flame can surround Silly Bird's body, project from her beak, and be shaped into lines or enclosing fields. Solitary Dance of the Great Dark Wheel Phoenix coordinates her steps and wingbeats with that flame, letting her establish a small fiery domain around Tan Xu. The flame consumes opposing sword energy and shen power until the trapped target is destroyed. Against Wu Zhen, she reshapes two severed arcs into a circle, demonstrating that interruption does not necessarily end the field technique. The Coral Fire Perch further amplifies the flame, while her mature phoenix body is described as immune to evil and yin forces and unusually suited to resisting death energy. Her abilities are formidable but not unlimited. She retreats from overwhelming insects and an eighth-grade python rather than defeating them. The ancient mist figure restrains her without difficulty, Ding Zhen's pressure nearly immobilizes her, and Wu Zhen can force her backward and cut her initial flame attack. Even after her full phoenix transformation, survival in the endless void depends on the combined advancement and protection of Zuo Mo's remaining group, not on Silly Bird alone. Relationships

Zuo Mo

Zuo Mo is first Silly Bird's owner and rider, but the relationship develops into reciprocal companionship. She carries him home when he is unconscious; he refuses to sell her after her first evolution and later searches Little Mountain Jie rather than abandon her. She repeatedly transports or protects him when he is depleted, while he seeks specialized treatment and crafts the Coral Fire Perch for her. The narration calls her his friend early in their travels and later gives her own remembered wish to become strong enough to guard him. Her tears at his apparent sacrifice and at his eventual recovery provide the clearest direct expression of that bond. (Chapters 102–103, 167–169, 266, 526–527, 752, 807, 851, 877)

A Gui

Silly Bird initially keeps away from A Gui because A Gui's aura terrifies her. Once A Gui is injured and that aura disappears, the relationship changes: Silly Bird becomes extremely good to her, lets her ride, stays close, and reacts when she is hurt. During the escape from the Clear Cloud Python, Silly Bird carries Zuo Mo while he holds A Gui, protecting both together. Her place beside A Gui recurs later, including in the memories and crisis that precipitate Silly Bird's phoenix transformation. (Chapters 246, 277, 309, 320, 325, 522, 526, 851)

The Little Ones

Lil Pagoda, Lil Black, Lil Fire, Tenth Grade, Black Gold, and the other small companions form Silly Bird's immediate household group. She is repeatedly treated as their leader: they gather around her, follow her cues, and seek her favor, while she watches over them and shows concern during their changes. Lil Pagoda indirectly causes her grey-mud evolution, and Tenth Grade shares guard duty with her. In the endless void, the Little Ones collectively take turns protecting Zuo Mo, with Silly Bird remaining the strongest rather than uniquely exempt from their need to rest and absorb high-grade materials. Her final kick at Black Gold is consistent with the physical discipline she has long used inside the group. (Chapters 222, 264–265, 283, 397, 454, 752, 802, 852, 857–858, 877)

Chun Yu Cheng and Qing Xiao

Chun Yu Cheng is the husbandry specialist most responsible for understanding and directing Silly Bird's later development. He studies the unexplained force strengthening her body, arranges the high-grade fire treatment, assesses the phoenix-like result with explicit caution about her bloodline, and presents her with mo skills from which she chooses her own method. Qing Xiao's relationship with Silly Bird is less individualized, but they are fellow survivors: the narration credits both with helping keep Zuo Mo alive in the endless void, and Qing Xiao remains within the protected household during that decade.
