Biography

A guide in Cloud Sea Jie

Shang Wei Ming first approaches Zuo Mo's Black Turtle as a local guide seeking work near Dong Sheng Cloud Island. For five third-grade jingshi per day, he explains the cloud islands, protected travel routes, local prices, formations, dangers beneath the cloud sea, and Xu Ling City's markets. His detailed knowledge helps the newcomers decide that they need a medium-sized island for a longer stay. (Chapters 439–441)

Their commercial arrangement begins with mutual gifts: Shang Wei Ming supplies a jade scroll recording transportation formations and shipping routes, while Zuo Mo gives him a water-element flying sword that he plans to save for his son. Although Shang initially judges the arrivals as ordinary merchants, their generous payment and bearing quickly convince him that they are a much larger power than they appear. (Chapters 439–440)

Ren Qing and Ren Cloud Island

At the Cloud Pavilion, Ren Qing publicly humiliates Shang Wei Ming over the decline of his once-powerful family and threatens his son's future to stop him resisting. Zuo Mo intervenes, and the confrontation expands until Ren Qing and the three Ren family elders are killed. Shang survives, warns his rescuers about the dangers around them, and directs them to the Ren family estate. (Chapters 441–445)

Grateful that Zuo Mo saved him from a fate he believed would be worse than death, Shang Wei Ming helps the group enter Ren Cloud Island with its island card and announces its change of ownership to the workers. He then remains with the renamed Turtle Island, where his familiarity with the region makes him useful beyond his original short-term employment as a guide. (Chapter 445)

Administrator and informant

Zuo Mo initially gives Shang Wei Ming routine affairs because of his local knowledge, but Shang proves more valuable by proposing ling-plant talismans and cultivation classes. The proposal addresses Turtle Island's shortage of ling plant farmers, creates a source of income, and offers a way to train the production cultivators the island will need in the future. (Chapters 449 and 454–455)

Shang Wei Ming subsequently investigates pressure on Turtle Island's classes, refuses outsiders' attempts to learn the group's origins, and locates Ning Yi's residence and route through a servant. His information network remains limited, and he is lightly wounded during unrest in Xu Ling City, but he continues bringing local intelligence; in his final scene, he warns that people are fleeing Cloud Sea Jie because of the advancing mo army. Appearance and personality

Shang Wei Ming is introduced with a clever-looking face, a cloth robe, and an open, unembarrassed manner appropriate to a guide soliciting customers. He is observant, commercially minded, methodical, and protective of his son. Danger can make him pale or timid, but gratitude and loyalty lead him to keep Turtle Island's secrets and continue serving even after his original contract has ended. Abilities and cultivation

  • Local and commercial knowledge: Shang Wei Ming knows Cloud Sea Jie's islands, shipping routes, transportation formations, commodity prices, sects, stores, prominent experts, and talismans. This knowledge is practical rather than supernatural and underpins his work as a guide and administrator. (Chapters 439–441, 449, 451, and 464–465)
  • Administrative planning: He proposes combining ling-plant talismans with local production and establishing paid cultivation classes that can also train Turtle Island's future workers. The plan solves several resource problems at once and changes Zuo Mo's assessment of his value. (Chapters 454–455)
