Nian Lu

Nian Lu is a sword xiu who develops from a coerced member of Gongsun Cha's early forces into Ma Fan's detail-oriented second-in-command. His refined lotus techniques, eye for battlefield information, and calculating support balance Lei Peng's frontal strength and Ma Fan's command ability.

Biography

From coerced fighter to Vermillion Bird veteran

Nian Lu first appears as part of the rebellious but increasingly disciplined fighters controlled by Gongsun Cha in Little Mountain Jie. Working in a Three Talents unit with Lei Peng and Zong Ru, he uses Lotus Flower Fall to survive a clash of killing moves and then strikes an exposed enemy after Ma Fan's ambush. Gongsun Cha's useful training and rewards gradually replace fear-based submission with practical loyalty: Nian Lu's group receives personal talismans based on achievement, and repeated victories show that following the young commander offers better odds and a better life than their former independence. He becomes one of the camp's trusted operatives, participating in the dangerous Nan Sheng Village abductions and returning with needed specialists despite pursuit. His white-lotus movement carries both himself and a captive at high speed, while his composure and teamwork support raids and full-scale charges. By the departure from Little Mountain Jie, Nian Lu no longer describes himself as merely trapped by jinzhi; he and Lei Peng conclude that they have changed and that following Zuo Mo is worth the risk, even though neither can yet articulate the institution they are helping create. Vice commander and jindan

When Xie Shan leaves Sky Peak Platoon, Ma Fan becomes commander and Nian Lu and Lei Peng become his vice commanders. Nian Lu helps scout, eliminate enemy observers, train against fiend-soul beasts, and fight in the ancient battlefield and Cloud Sea Jie. He remains below jindan for much of this period and can be wounded when forcing Lotus Sword Scripture against stronger opposition, but repeated combat carries him to the threshold and then through core formation alongside Ma Fan and Lei Peng. The trio later trains Black Turtle Camp from inexperienced recruits. Nian Lu identifies a Xuan Kong Temple battalion by its insignia, anticipates its Bodhisattva's Raging Lotus charge, and helps Ma Fan prepare the improvised camp to survive. The defense suffers severe losses, but the survivors harden and Nian Lu emerges surrounded by stronger sword essence. His role is not independent supreme command: he provides calculation, recognition, morale, and tactical detail within Ma Fan's larger plan. (Chapters 511, 538, 577–580, 637)

Mo Cloud Sea's formation-defense campaigns

Years later Gongsun Cha's investment has turned Ma Fan into a gold battle general, with Nian Lu retained as the cunning, detail-oriented half of the support pair and Lei Peng as the assault force. Against two mo marshals, Ma Fan directs a jinzhi defense line, Nian Lu supplies calculations inside the formation, and Lei Peng leads the counterattack. The division of labor lets their battalion draw enemies into prepared gaps and exploit the chaos after Lei Peng defeats one marshal through raw power. (Chapters 752, 770–772)

Nian Lu's latest direct scene leaves him alive inside that victorious command structure, wiping away nervous sweat while helping Ma Fan adjust the damaged defense. A later allied conversation names his and Lei Peng's sharp tongues as a reason other commanders do not want to return in failure. The source does not assign Nian Lu a later realm beyond jindan, an independent battalion, or a final role in the concluding Kun Lun campaign. (Chapters 772, 778)

Appearance and personality

Nian Lu is handsome and commonly wears snowy-white robes. He has carefully arranged bangs, a slightly soft voice, and a habit of producing a mirror to fix his hair even before battle. His lotus movement and white clothing create an elegant image that attracts attention, a contrast Lei Peng constantly exploits when teasing him. (Chapters 245–246, 283, 427, 435, 770)

He is lively, optimistic, vain, detail-oriented, and verbally quick. Nian Lu jokes to relieve pressure but notices insignia, tactical patterns, and weaknesses that others miss. He worries more visibly than Lei Peng and Ma Fan, yet his concern usually becomes preparation rather than retreat. (Chapters 218, 303, 325, 396, 577–580, 752, 770–772)

Abilities and cultivation

Nian Lu practices Lotus Sword Scripture and comprehends sword essence while still at ningmai. Lotus Flower Fall forms a blooming lotus whose falling petals become separate sword energies, combining serenity with an enchanting quality. He can also produce blue-white sword lotuses around his fingers and use a white lotus as high-speed movement support. His techniques suit precision and flexible positioning more than the head-on destructive force associated with Lei Peng. (Chapters 217, 233, 242, 246, 330, 427, 437)

He begins at the second stratum of ningmai, approaches jindan after the ancient battlefield campaigns, and completes core formation by Chapter 479. Later evidence emphasizes command support rather than a new named personal attack. Nian Lu is skilled in calculation and battlefield detail, but Ma Fan remains the main commander and Lei Peng the designated breakthrough fighter; this complementary specialization, rather than individual dominance, is the trio's primary mechanic. Relationships

Ma Fan and Lei Peng

Ma Fan, Lei Peng, and Nian Lu form a long-running command trio. Ma Fan supplies patient direction, Lei Peng supplies direct force, and Nian Lu supplies calculation and detail. Nian Lu and Lei Peng constantly trade insults, but their battlefield trust is durable, while both accept Ma Fan's authority when joking ends and action begins. Zong Ru

Zong Ru is Nian Lu's original Three Talents teammate and a close friend. Nian Lu worries beside him after severe channel injuries, stands guard during his later core formation, and greets his return warmly. Zong Ru's advancement eventually takes him onto a different cultivation and command path, but the early team's loyalty remains explicit. (Chapters 217–237, 395)

Gongsun Cha and Zuo Mo

Gongsun Cha turns Nian Lu from a coerced combatant into a trained officer through formations, rewards, and relentless standards. Zuo Mo supplies equipment, cultivation infrastructure, and the faction that gives their survival continuity. Nian Lu fears Gongsun Cha's punishments and jokes about Zuo Mo's strangeness, yet repeatedly chooses their command after the initial coercion has ceased to define his service. Items

The Cloud Wings are only tested by Nian Lu during a merchant's demonstration and are not established as his property.
