Nan Men Yang

Nan Men Yang is a poor independent cultivator whose enormous frame, physical strength, and direct sword style make him one of the Sword Test Conference's most conspicuous competitors. His performance earns multiple offers and ultimately a place in Dong Fu Hall as Yu Bai's junior sect brother.

Biography

Wu Kong and the Sword Test Conference

Nan Men Yang arrives without the backing of a sect or family and draws attention through sheer physical presence. At twenty-four and ningmai, he practices the low-grade Vajra Scripture and Mountain Breaker Sword, yet his strength lets him fight Yu Bai on even terms and inspires competing recruitment offers. Inside Zuo Mo's formation, he answers every barrier with greater force, clashes three times with a seal soldier, and destroys it, though the effort leaves him weakened. Yu Bai then attacks him in anger, and the two expend each other until Chang Heng and the yellow-faced man exploit the situation. Nan Men Yang leaves the conference defeated but recognized as a valuable, unusually powerful grassroots cultivator. (Chapters 95, 119, 138, 141–142, and 144–150)

Little Mountain Jie and Golden Crow City

After the conference, Nan Men Yang joins Dong Fu Hall and becomes Yu Bai's shidi. Zuo Mo hears of the new relationship while considering who might enter the secret realm and expects the two to operate as a team. The corpus documents this institutional transition but does not place Nan Men Yang in a later Little Mountain Jie campaign or state his eventual fate. (Chapters 157–158)

Appearance and personality

Nan Men Yang is one zhang tall, with an exceptionally broad, muscular body whose hard flesh carries a faint golden sheen. He is the largest competitor at the conference, and even his walk makes the ground tremble. In combat he carries a gigantic, door-sized sword that matches his scale. (Chapters 95, 119, and 138)

He is straightforward, battle-loving, and uncomplicated in his reasoning: if a formation has not broken, he concludes that he has not used enough force. He does not conceal his enthusiasm and openly praises a worthy opponent. This simplicity makes him admirable in direct combat but leaves him vulnerable to more calculating contestants. Abilities and cultivation

Nan Men Yang is a ningmai cultivator who combines the second-grade Vajra Scripture with the second-grade Mountain Breaker Sword. The former develops his unusually hard, powerful body; the latter channels that strength through a huge sword in direct, thunderous attacks. He can meet Yu Bai head-on and destroy a seal soldier after three forceful collisions. (Chapters 119, 138, 141–142, and 144–150)

His method is narrow as well as impressive. He relies on overpowering obstacles and shows little answer to formations, attrition, or manipulation beyond applying more strength. Destroying the seal soldier visibly wilts him, and his renewed fight with Yu Bai leaves both men open to rivals who preserve their strength and choose their timing. (Chapters 147–150)

Relationships

• Yu Bai: Initially his prominent opponent, Yu Bai later becomes Nan Men Yang's senior sect brother in Dong Fu Hall. Their mutual expenditure inside the formation contributes to both men's defeat there. (Chapters 138, 147–150, and 157–158)
• Zuo Mo: Nan Men Yang is trapped in Zuo Mo's conference formation and fights its seal soldier, but no lasting personal feud is established. Zuo Mo later recognizes the significance of his partnership with Yu Bai. (Chapters 141–142, 144–150, and 157–158)
• Dong Fu Hall and Heart Lake Sword Sect: Both recognize his value, with Gu Rong Ping extending an invitation associated with Heart Lake. Nan Men Yang ultimately joins Dong Fu Hall instead. (Chapters 138 and 157–158)
• Wu Kong Sword Sect: Its elders consider recruiting him but conclude that they lack a scripture suited to his physical path. (Chapter 138)
