Kun Lun ordered Ming Lie, the nearest available commander, to observe the conflict around the mo and act at his discretion. Traveling with Song Yuan, he maintained enough vigilance to limit the opening damage from Liang Wei's ambush, recognized that the enemy silver battle general had suppressed him, and stopped pursuit rather than compound his losses after an unfavorable exchange. (Chapters 427–430)

Ming Lie recognized the three-section wave killing charge used by Gongsun Cha's forces and correctly identified its dependence on uninterrupted successive waves. He timed a counterattack for the moment after their charge, then halted when poison destroyed the mo forces he expected to exploit, responding to the changing field while developing respect for his unseen opponent's command skill. Ming Lie deployed his favored Twinkling Brilliance Battle Formation, using seven interlocking sword-xiu groups, flexible movement, and deceptive images to contest the Snowflake formation. His Celestial Balance command method rendered the battle in exacting detail within his mind, but the unfamiliar yao-derived formation steadily compressed his options and exposed a clear gap between his control and Gongsun Cha's. When He Jian's jindan team opened an apparent opportunity, Ming Lie altered the formation and attempted to capture the opposing elite. Zuo Mo's heavy-armored Guard Camp instead entered from concealment and shattered his arrangement; after Song Yuan was killed, Ming Lie was struck down in the same sudden assault, ending the battalion's resistance. Appearance and personality

Ming Lie has a handsome face and the bearing of an experienced Kun Lun commander. He is proud but disciplined, able to stop a bad pursuit and admire an opponent's skill. Sustained pressure and the hidden arrival of another enemy force eventually turn that controlled confidence into fury and hopelessness.

Abilities and cultivation

Ming Lie specializes in formation command. Twinkling Brilliance divides his sword xiu into seven interlocking groups whose changing positions and illusions support flexible attack and defense, while Celestial Balance gives him a detailed mental model of the battlefield. These methods still depend on intact troops, accurate information, and familiar patterns; the Snowflake formation outmatches his control, and a concealed heavy force breaks the formation before he can recover.
