Dragon Heart
The Dragon Heart is the enormous, still-beating heart of Drakos, preserved in Lanthanor's palace and used as the core of its principal defensive formation. It is both a bodily remnant of an ancient dragon and a strategic relic that has protected successive kings.
History
The heart beneath the throne
The heart stands in the royal chambers above Lanthanor's treasury, beating loudly enough that generations of kings sleep to its rhythm. The Dragon Heart Formation built around it protects the palace, controls hidden routes, and guards access to the ultra-high-grade Energy source beneath the complex. Full control requires proximity to the heart and recognition by the formation; before Daneel's coup, the Vice Sect Master exploits that control point as part of the Withering Leaf Sect's takeover. (Chapters 81 and 91–104)
Daneel's seizure of the formation
Daneel Anivron reaches the core despite the stronger combatants around it and lets the System analyze and assume control from within one meter. He turns the palace's Dragon Claws, barriers, spatial lock, and routes against the attackers, making the heart central to his conquest of Lanthanor. Later assaults reveal that control is not equivalent to invulnerability: projected attacks can be distorted or countered, and an Orb of Dissonance temporarily disables the Dragon Heart Formation, forcing Daneel to rely on prepared backup formations until the main defenses recover. (Chapters 81–88, 119, and 202–215)
Drakos's remnant and a model for transformation
After the Empire Spirit identifies himself, Daneel learns that the physical heart belonged to Drakos; the dragon's active consciousness is associated with the palace pedestal rather than housed in the organ itself. The heart remains alive long after the species' disappearance and is described as the last beating dragon heart in Angaria. Daneel studies it alongside Drakos's memories while learning the Shapeshifter inheritance, using its fire and living structure as evidence for a dragon transformation rather than consuming or destroying it. Its beat is still heard in the royal chambers during his later investigation of the Order. (Chapters 471, 579, 666, 697–720, 819, and 848)
Abilities and properties
- As the core of the Dragon Heart Formation, it supports palace-scale barriers, Dragon Claw attacks, spatial locking, controlled passages, and access restrictions around the royal complex and treasury. (Chapters 81–104)
- Control is proximity- and interface-dependent. Daneel's System can analyze the formation within one meter of the heart, but the heart does not automatically grant mastery to anyone merely present in the chamber. (Chapters 81–87)
- The formation has finite range and can be distorted, opposed, or disabled by specialized artefacts such as the Orb of Dissonance. Backup formations are therefore maintained separately. (Chapters 119, 202, and 213–215)
- The organ remains biologically active and preserves authentic dragon traits useful for bloodline and transformation study. It is not shown to contain Drakos's operative consciousness or to grant a complete dragon transformation by itself. (Chapters 471, 579, and 697–710)
Ownership and custody
| Holder or custodian | Relationship to the item |
|---|---|
| Drakos | The heart is his preserved bodily organ; his consciousness is not treated as an object owned with it. |
| Kings of Lanthanor | Institutional custodians who sleep and rule beside the heart and inherit access to the palace formation. |
| Daneel Anivron | Latest confirmed controller and custodian of the Dragon Heart Formation. |
| Withering Leaf Sect | Briefly contested control of the formation during its attempted palace takeover. |
