Ripley
Ripley is an eccentric Lanthanorian enchanter whose workshop gives Daneel Anivron his first practical exposure to trinket creation. After the change of regime, Ripley becomes head of the kingdom's Research Division and co-develops the communication infrastructure behind the Network of Angaria. (Chapters 56–150)
Biography
A reclusive enchanter builds royal communications
Ripley receives Daneel only because Jonah sends a recommendation, orders the boy to remain silent, and resumes dangerous experiments on a defense trinket. Repeated explosions reveal both his lack of concern for appearances and his persistence in testing a design until he understands it. Daneel quietly studies the process and later returns to observe offensive and defensive trinkets, using Ripley's workshop as a source of techniques for the faction he is building. Their early relationship is therefore mutually useful even before Ripley knows the scale of Daneel's ambitions. (Chapters 56–67)
After Daneel becomes king, Ripley accepts leadership of the Research Division because it offers the resources to pursue his work. Only he and Daneel know the complete mass-production schematic, while separated units handle partial stages. Ripley oversees communication-trinket production, develops schematics at the king's request, and works with him to create the broadcasting station that becomes the technical foundation of the Network. His latest confirmed scenes leave him alive as a trusted specialist whose knowledge is protected through compartmentalization. (Chapters 130–150)
Appearance and personality
Ripley is a thin, middle-aged man with a scraggly beard, a balding shiny patch, and clothes often stained with soot and left unwashed. His workshop and face bear the residue of explosions. Irritable with interruptions, fond of wine, and careless about conventional tidiness, he nevertheless shows intense concentration, physical competence at the forge, and stubborn experimental curiosity. (Chapters 56–57)
Abilities and power
Ripley is identified as a high-level Mage and skilled enchanter. He levitates engraving needles, forges raw ore into coins, removes impurities through magic, and builds defensive, offensive, communication, and broadcasting trinkets. His process demonstrates an important limitation: correct-looking formations can still overheat or explode, so enchantment requires repeated testing and exact schematics. At the Research Division, compartmentalization protects designs from theft but means production depends on coordinated units and the few people who know the whole plan. (Chapters 56–67 and 130–150)
Relationships
- Daneel Anivron: Daneel first learns by silently observing Ripley, then recruits him to lead the Research Division and shares full communication schematics with him. Their collaboration converts isolated experimentation into kingdom-scale production. (Chapters 56–67 and 130–150)
- Jonah: Jonah's recommendation is the only reason Ripley permits the unknown Daneel into his workshop, establishing an older professional connection between them. (Chapter 56)
Items
- Enchanter's needle table: A flat work surface whose tethered needles rise and engrave complex formations into a trinket. Ripley's failed prototypes show that precise engraving alone does not guarantee safe activation. (Chapter 56)
- Broadcasting station: Ripley and Daneel simplify and adapt a military transmission design into the station used for continent-wide sound broadcasting. (Chapters 143–150)
