Rayen

Rayen is a Hero-level Mage whose loyalty to his son Raul changes him from an enemy sent after Daneel into a long-term source of aid for Angaria.

Biography

A father's surrender and service

Rayen initially believes Raul has been killed while targeting Lanthanor and sends a clone to murder Daneel Anivron. Daneel reveals that Raul is alive and uses that fact as leverage. Because the Hero Chain prevents Rayen from simply swearing a contrary oath, Rayen offers to accept the same mental safeguard placed on his son and kneels rather than risk Raul's life. The coercive beginning develops into useful cooperation: he supplies books, intelligence, and direct aid while training beside Raul. (Chapters 527–567)

During the Church conflict, Rayen temporarily accepts transformation into a primordial monster with other Heroes, gaining physical ferocity at the cost of rational thought and ordinary magic. He later returns to himself, appears with Raul among the defenders Daneel summons, and attends Daneel's wedding as the recognized master of darkness. Father and son finally give Daneel their personally compiled knowledge rather than an impersonal treasure. (Chapters 897–906, 1,058, and 1,093–1,095)

Appearance and personality

Rayen is commonly shrouded in darkness, with his eyes the clearest visible feature; the corpus gives no stable uncovered portrait. He is proud and dangerous when confronting Daneel, but his defining motive is paternal devotion. Once Raul is safe, he accepts humiliation, safeguards, and service that he would otherwise reject. Abilities and power

Rayen is a Hero Mage specializing in darkness. He can create lethal dark projectiles and scythe-like attacks, erect Hero-level defenses, and deploy a clone carrying a divided stream of consciousness. His Hero Chain enforces loyalty to Angaria and prevents a voluntary oath that conflicts with it. The primordial transformation boosts his body enough for direct warfare but suppresses reason and normal spell use, making it a temporary emergency measure rather than a permanent advancement. His latest appearances show him restored to his normal Hero identity. (Chapters 527–528, 567, 897–906, and 1,093)

Relationships

• Raul: Rayen's only son and disciple is the motive behind his surrender, later becoming his complementary practitioner of balance.
• Daneel Anivron: Daneel first controls Rayen through Raul's safety, but Rayen later contributes knowledge and defense to Daneel's cause.
• Head of the Order: Rayen initially operates under the Head's authority and is constrained by Hero-level institutional oaths.
