Olfax

Olfax is a Lanthanorian sleeper agent embedded in Elfaven. Through a succession of identities ranging from sewer worker to wealthy investor, he gives Daneel Anivron the surveillance, access, and local influence needed to intervene in Eldinor's elections and later investigate the danger surrounding Queen Eldra. (Chapters 145–494)

Biography

From sleeper agent to Elfaven spymaster

Olfax is activated while working in Elfaven's sewers, where his filthy occupation gives him access below the palace and lets him conceal a listening device. He then adopts the identity of a rich merchant and rescues the failing Voice of Eldinor as its investor, creating a ready-made outlet for Daneel's election strategy. Olfax passes recordings to Lanthanor, arranges discreet contact with Eldra Dartingnon, watches meeting sites, rents secure rooms, helps Daneel enter restricted warehouses, and moves disguised operatives and witnesses through the Grand Debate. His success depends on patient cover-building rather than public force. (Chapters 145, 156–176, and 179–191)

Years later, Olfax's merchant identity has become a respected and genuinely prosperous position in Elfaven, but he continues to serve Lanthanor. He recruits hungry palace servants as informants, monitors Eldra, and brings Daneel evidence that a maid has been behaving unnaturally. His access helps uncover the manipulation surrounding Dinora and the blood-purifying formation, while his local standing supports Daneel's efforts to shape the aftermath. At his latest confirmed scenes he remains alive, embedded, and useful precisely because the public sees a successful middle-aged investor rather than a foreign spy. (Chapters 489–494)

Appearance and personality

Olfax is a middle-aged human with a sharply trimmed beard in his established merchant identity. His earlier disguises include a sewer worker coated in waste and a balding, kind-faced man guiding a child witness at the Grand Debate. He is disciplined enough to endure degrading cover, cautious about exposing Lanthanor's origin, and quick to explain the operational risk when Daneel proposes using his hidden surveillance route. (Chapters 145, 163, 172, and 489)

Abilities and power

Olfax's principal abilities are disguise, infiltration, surveillance, and human intelligence. He maintains several names and social roles, codes observations on parchment, places paired listening trinkets, and uses commercial patronage to gain influence without revealing state involvement. His work can provide sound, movements, introductions, and local rumor, but it depends on physical placement, intact cover, and trustworthy sources; he cannot simply see through protected areas or compel informants supernaturally. No formal combat realm is stated in the supplied evidence. (Chapters 145, 156–164, 169–176, and 489–494)

Relationships

  • Daneel Anivron: Olfax executes Daneel's covert Eldinor strategy, warns him when proposed communications would expose their origin, and later supplies the palace intelligence that draws him back into Eldinor's crisis. (Chapters 145–191 and 489–494)
  • Eldra Dartingnon: He surveils Eldra, facilitates her meetings with Daneel, and helps build the campaign that makes her queen. Later he monitors her palace as the signs of Dinora's influence emerge. (Chapters 157–181 and 489–494)
  • Kellor: Kellor receives Olfax's transmissions and works beside him in the election operation, including the Grand Debate and the movement of witnesses. (Chapters 157, 163, and 169–176)

Items

  • Paired listening trinket: A small metal device whose hidden component transmits nearby sound to its counterpart. Olfax conceals one route through the palace sewers and uses another while observing a meeting site; discovery or conspicuous movement can expose the operation. (Chapters 145 and 162–163)
  • Disguise and communication tools: Lanthanor supplies the covert equipment that supports Olfax's identities and reports. Their value lies in placement and disciplined use rather than overwhelming magical power. (Chapters 145–176)
