Laravel
Laravel is a younger prince of Lanthanor who begins as Daneel's arrogant academy rival but ultimately betrays his father's tyranny and dies enabling the coup that replaces it.
Biography
Rival prince and unlikely ally
Laravel uses his status and superior instruction to show off at the Magic Academy, antagonizes Daneel Anivron, and loses to him in the first-year assessment. After withdrawing from open conflict, he secretly approaches Daneel with information about the royal army and the palace. His motive is partly self-preservation—the Royal Technique and his father's control have made royal life a trap—but his intelligence becomes the route through which Daneel can challenge the King. (Chapters 35–48 and 71–79)
The old King's Royal Technique transforms Laravel into a black-haired, bestial state when its restraints are removed, turning him against Daneel. Daneel uses a fire needle to destroy his Mageroot and brain, granting the release visible on Laravel's face. Despite that forced end, Laravel's secret passage and betrayal make Daneel's entry into the palace possible. Daneel later spares much of the royal family and preserves their place in the historical account partly because he remembers Laravel's sacrifice and promise. (Chapters 78–98, 104, 144, and 155)
Appearance and personality
Laravel first appears as a richly dressed boy and conspicuous prince, prone to harsh glares and public displays. He is arrogant and shrewd, with showing off identified as his chief weakness, yet he is also capable of reassessing his position and taking a lethal risk against his father. (Chapters 35–48 and 73–79)
Abilities and power
Laravel is a Human-level Mage trained beyond the academy curriculum, demonstrating lightning and fire magic. He practices Lanthanor's Royal Technique, whose limiter suppresses severe side effects. When the King removes that limiter, black, sharp hair covers Laravel's body and his behavior becomes violently bestial. The transformation is not controlled advancement: it compromises his identity and leaves him dangerous to allies, and Daneel can end it by targeting his Mageroot and brain. His power ends with his death. (Chapters 38–42 and 78–80, 98, and 113)
Relationships
- Daneel Anivron: Their rivalry becomes a clandestine alliance. Daneel kills him only after the Royal Technique turns him into an uncontrolled threat, then honors his contribution.
- The old King of Lanthanor: Laravel's father treats him as the least talented son and uses the Royal Technique to control him, ultimately making rebellion a route to escape.
- Kellor: Kellor recognizes Laravel's shrewdness and warns Daneel about him, while later understanding the importance of the prince's betrayal.
Items
Laravel receives a first-grade Pyromaniac Trinket after placing second in the academy assessment, but the corpus does not make it a lasting signature possession. (Chapter 47)
