Ashahell

Ashahell is the prodigious former leader of the Sect of Hedon and a high-ranking Champion whose sincere desire to preserve Angaria becomes an argument for exterminating its people. His secret alliance with the Church, exceptional Sense Distorter Path, and effort to destroy Angaria's Hero-level defenders make him one of Daneel Anivron's most dangerous early opponents.

Biography

Champion of the Church

Ashahell is first named by a dying conspirator who claims that both men sought authority through the Church and that Ashahell betrayed him to the Council. By the time Daneel investigates, Ashahell is already surrounded by the legend of a miraculous birth, unmatched talent, enormous resource consumption, and advancement as the youngest Champion in thousands of years. He has risen to lead both the Sect of Hedon and the High Council, while the former sect leader continues carrying out his orders. That public standing lets him pressure Central Continent rulers, distribute weapons such as doom mosquitoes to test or destabilize kingdoms, and present preparations for the Church's invasion as continental defense. Beneath the prestige, he despises the Big Four's resource extraction and believes that preserving Angaria's land matters more than preserving the people living on it. (Chapters 276, 305, 398–401, and 423–430)

That distinction defines his confrontation with Daneel. After secretly testing the young king's response to the mosquitoes, Ashahell immobilizes both his clone and original body, removes him from Lanthanor, and offers partnership in “saving” Angaria. He clarifies that this means killing its inhabitants so that the depleted land can begin again, and threatens to replace Daneel with a clone when he refuses. Daneel survives by inviting a memory search and hiding the truth of his life. Ashahell then advances a larger plan under the cover of reconstructing an imperial inheritance: he gathers the High Council's Heroes in person, poisons their tea, and arranges for the Church's resident Exalted Hero to finish any survivors. Xuan's warning breaks up the meeting, but Ashahell drinks the poison himself and endures its effects to preserve his cover; two Heroes are nevertheless left comatose. (Chapters 433–438)

Under surveillance but not yet convicted, Ashahell waits for new Church support until Daneel manipulates his conflict with The Mad Doctor. Believing that the Mad Doctor has violated continental law and trusting planted information, Ashahell destroys the man's safeguards and challenges him directly. His Sense Distorter Path defeats the Madness Domain by altering the Mad Doctor's sense of time and space, letting Ashahell cross the hostile field and punch a massive hole through him. The Mad Doctor survives because a Hero intervenes, and evidence placed by Daneel turns Ashahell's cover-up into grounds for indefinite imprisonment. Later investigation reframes Ashahell's celebrated advancement: after another man slaughtered ten thousand people, Ashahell absorbed the resulting blood-sacrifice power, and retrospective evidence confirms that this foundation helped make him an exceptionally powerful Champion. The exact circumstances remain disputed, but the technique's remnants of resentment carry a known risk of damaging the user's mind. (Chapters 474–483 and 583)

Imprisonment weakens but does not convert him. Ashahell eventually refuses food and the Energy resources maintaining his Peak Champion power, bringing himself close to losing a level, then requests a meeting with Daneel. He explicitly retains his belief that Angaria's people are a scourge, yet concedes that Daneel repeatedly wins against impossible odds. Constrained by his Church oath, he trades intelligence and his diary for a chance to point Daneel toward an overlooked Church contingency connected to the destruction of the Dwarve's Rum. The warning helps expose a threat even though it does not erase his crimes or extremist objective. During Daneel's farewell he is still alive, proud despite being gagged and bound, and remains in custody when Daneel says that any attempt to change his driving purpose must wait until his return. He is then placed in dreamless slumber with the other Angarians. (Chapters 817–819 and 1,163–1,164)

Appearance and personality

Ashahell is first shown with shoulder-length brown hair, a long clean-shaven face, thin lips, and a small globe-shaped earring. He wears black robes with gold trim, and his stillness and controlled expression reinforce the authority of a sect leader whom surrounding Champions treat with reverence. Years in prison leave his hair reaching nearly to his lower back, his face unshaven, and his complexion pale from refusing food and Energy, but his bearing remains aristocratic and proud. (Chapters 419, 423, 474, 817, and 1,163)

His public manner is calm, restrained, and capable of appearing humble, while his private life is marked by loneliness, regret, and an obsession with perfect plans. He genuinely loves Angaria as a land and is distressed by its depletion, but he treats its inhabitants as expendable parasites and converts environmental grief into mass-murderous certainty. He is willing to suffer poison, surveillance, or imprisonment for that cause. Power itself is a secondary fascination rather than simple vanity: he is intensely curious about how far the Path to Power extends. Even in defeat, he can recognize evidence that Daneel may succeed where he failed, though this pragmatic trust never becomes repentance. (Chapters 423–438, 474, 817, and 1,163)

Abilities and power

Ashahell is a Peak Exalted Champion whose strength rests on unusually rapid advancement, a blood-sacrifice-enhanced foundation, advanced spellcraft, and the acquired Sense Distorter Champion Path. His power lets him dominate individual opponents far below his realm and threaten other Champions, but it does not overcome Hero-level intervention, secure imprisonment, or every sufficiently complex mind.

Sense Distorter Champion Path

The Sense Distorter is an acquired Path that can only be started by someone capable of perfectly controlling their own senses. Its demonstrated Domain is a projection of the Path into the world rather than the universal Domain possessed by Heroes. Ashahell can interfere with more than sight, hearing, touch, taste, pain, and smell: he also distorts a target's perception of time and space. Against the Mad Doctor, this makes Ashahell appear to be walking slowly while the victim's actions are actually delayed; Ashahell crosses the Madness Domain, strikes, and retreats before normal perception returns. The same general control lets him immobilize Daneel, interfere with communication, and enter an undefended mind to inspect and rewrite memories. (Chapters 433–435 and 479–481)

The Path is powerful but not absolute. Its intrusion is designed around a single opponent and does not guarantee success when the target's mind is more complex than Ashahell's. A prepared victim can attempt to reduce the openings available by cutting off senses, although the Mad Doctor's focus on only the five basic senses fails to account for time and space. The Path also does not erase external danger: while Ashahell closes on the Mad Doctor, the Domain's uncontrolled elemental attacks destroy his trinkets and injure him, and an arriving Hero ends the encounter and removes him before he can secure the result. (Chapters 479–481 and 978)

Champion spellcraft and perception

Beyond his Path, Ashahell can teleport over long distances, deploy advanced restraints, inspect elementary-particle traces, scan memories with his mageroot, and detect subtle anomalies that escape ordinary observers. He nearly notices Daneel while the latter uses the Basilisk's Breath and searches the Sect of Hedon's tower, and he tracks and restrains both Daneel's clone and original body quickly enough to prevent an ordinary escape. His control and output once let him defeat an Exalted Champion while he was only an Amateur Champion, according to the surviving Watcher's account. These feats depend on relative power and access: specialized Hero-level surveillance can watch him, Heroes can forcefully transport and contain him, and by his later imprisonment Daneel judges that his own improved power is sufficient to escape if needed. (Chapters 398, 422–435, 474, 481, and 817)

Blood-sacrifice foundation

The blood-sacrifice method uses the resentment of victims at death to leave consciousness-like remnants that can facilitate a Warrior's leap into the Champion realm and grant additional power afterward. Records also warn that those remnants can interact adversely with the user's consciousness. Ashahell reaches the site of a ten-thousand-person massacre after the killings and takes the concentrated power that would otherwise have been left behind; later analysis treats its use in his Champion breakthrough as certain while acknowledging uncertainty about the surrounding account. It helps explain why his Champion strength so greatly exceeds normal expectations, but its possible mental effects cannot be separated cleanly from his preexisting beliefs and choices. (Chapters 276, 422, 434, and 583)

Relationships

  • Daneel Anivron: Ashahell first sees Daneel as a rare potential partner, tests his values, and tries to recruit him under threat of death. Daneel rejects the extermination plan, foils the High Council poisoning, and engineers the evidence that leads to Ashahell's imprisonment. Years later, Ashahell entrusts him with a veiled warning because his repeated victories offer the only remaining chance to protect the land Ashahell values.
  • The Mad Doctor: The two Champions become convenient rivals because both are powerful, suspected of forbidden conduct, and accustomed to settling threats through force. When Daneel feeds Ashahell false evidence that the Mad Doctor has violated continental law, Ashahell attacks him, overwhelms his Domain, and attempts to erase the evidence. The failed killing becomes the immediate cause of Ashahell's incarceration.
  • The Watcher: The Watcher confronts Ashahell after overhearing his Church arrangement and badly underestimates him. Ashahell defeats the then-Exalted Champion in one attack despite being only an Amateur Champion, leaving the bodiless survivor to recruit Daneel against him.
  • The Church: Ashahell treats the Church as both an instrument and a route to greater authority. He feeds it opportunities to weaken Angaria, coordinates the attempted extermination of the High Council, and accepts an oath that later limits what he can reveal; nevertheless, his ultimate loyalty is to his conception of Angaria rather than to the Church itself.

Items

  • Church detection trinket: After Ashahell's poisoning plot, this special object lets him detect Hero-level surveillance that would normally be beyond a Champion's senses. It does not remove the watchers or prevent his later capture. (Chapter 474)
  • Poisoned tea leaves: Ashahell obtains imported leaves whose released essence can kill even an Exalted Hero after sufficient consumption. He places them in the High Council's tea and deliberately drinks from his own cup after the plan is exposed, relying on a countermeasure to survive and preserve uncertainty about his guilt.
