Sun's Corona

The Sun's Corona is a light-golden amulet created by Waldo K. Maskelyne from gathered godhood. Its anti-undead divine powers, sensitivity to the World of Souls, and hidden coordinates make it both one of Lucien Evans's longest-serving protective items and the key that leads the Congress of Magic to Maskelyne's lost expedition. History

Maskelyne's bequest in the Grand Cross

Maskelyne left the amulet in a locked refuge reached through the Grand Cross, together with written instructions for the predicted "nonbeliever" who would find his notes. Lucien discovered it in a desk drawer as a round badge-sized amulet carved with sunrays, a crown-like pattern, and a central cross. The accompanying parchment identified Maskelyne as its maker, explained its five-layer seal, and taught the finder to place a personal spiritual imprint in its structure. Lucien followed those directions and became its owner before escaping the collapsing lock. Its divine power and Saint Truth-like emblem immediately made the artifact evidence of a mystery older than the contemporary Church. (Chapters 122–123)

A sealed weapon and guide

The amulet grew with Lucien rather than giving him its entire level-nine force at once. After his first seal opened, he used Holy Strike and Death Resistance against Verdi's forces and the undead around Habearo; its heat also warned him that a powerful undead observer was following him in Allyn. Reaching middle rank opened Burning Radiance, Death Ward, and Flame Strike, while senior rank opened another layer and sharpened the warning sense enough for him to judge that a specter was less than twenty-five metres away. He also relied on the amulet to see passages into the World of Souls, scout the far side of a gap before crossing, and escape from Finks's tomb. These uses made it a navigation and survival instrument as much as an offensive one. (Chapters 128, 142–144, 184, 201–202, 248–251, 279, 376, 390)

Lucien did not treat every reaction as perfectly understood. During Rhine's operations he withheld the amulet when he feared its affinity with the World of Souls might expose him, and later used its structure as a partial model for a badge that could absorb a Seed of Spirit. Sard sought the Sun's Corona because he believed it contained Maskelyne's final coordinates, but his subordinates failed to take it from Lucien. (Chapters 388, 477, 555–556)

The path to Maskelyne

After becoming an archmage and then a legendary sorcerer, Lucien broke the final two barriers. The penultimate barrier supplied the ninth-circle anti-undead divine power, while the last disclosed changing coordinates for the place Maskelyne had described. Lucien shared those coordinates with the Highest Council and took the amulet on the resulting expedition instead of trying to enter the World of Souls alone. (Chapters 585, 611, 614)

There, the Corona revealed otherwise intangible godhood, interacted with Maskelyne's concealed laboratory, and opened its secret door. Its presence also stirred Maskelyne's suppressed consciousness within the seraph Arvin, allowing him briefly to recognize Lucien and explain what had happened. Surviving records later confirmed that Maskelyne had created the Corona from gathered godhood as his first experimental step toward the mysteries of divinity and immortality. The item therefore completed the purpose of its bequest: it guided a suitably powerful successor to both its maker and the evidence he had left behind. (Chapters 616, 630, 635, 639)

Abilities and properties

• The Corona is a level-nine item powered by gathered godhood rather than ordinary magic. It bears five seals keyed to the wearer's advancement through junior rank, middle rank, senior rank, archmage, and legendary rank; it does not provide its full strength to an unqualified finder. (Chapters 122–123, 585, 639)
• Its nine once-per-day divine powers are Holy Strike, Death Resistance, Burning Radiance, Death Ward, Flame Strike, Exorcist Halo, Ashes, Sunburst, and the ninth-circle anti-undead power later called Bane of the Undead. The accessible set depends on how many seals have opened. (Chapters 122, 248, 491, 585)
• The wearer can detect undead presences and gaps between the main world and the World of Souls. Its precision improves as seals open: with only one layer it could warn Lucien of a powerful nearby undead without identifying it, whereas three open layers let him estimate the distance to a following specter. (Chapters 184, 201–202, 376)
• Its light can purify or injure undead and other death-aligned creatures, and Death Ward can protect the wearer from death-related effects. Demonstrated results range from destroying husks and underground guards to helping suppress spirits through Exorcist Halo; those results still depend on the unlocked spell and the target's resistance. (Chapters 142–144, 248, 390, 491)
• The amulet can expose phenomena tied to godhood and resonate with related divine structures. It let Lucien and a temporarily marked Sophia perceive a hidden light of godhood, revealed such lights in the Room of the Holy Spirit, and served as a structural reference for later divine-item work. Sophia's temporary mark was erased afterward and did not transfer ownership. (Chapters 408, 476–477, 545, 616)
• The final layer stores a changing coordinate pattern and functions as a key to Maskelyne's concealed laboratory. That guidance is specific to the legacy Maskelyne embedded; the corpus does not establish the Corona as a universal key to every World of Souls site. (Chapters 585, 611, 630)
• Affinity can create risk. Lucien deliberately avoided exposing the Corona when he did not understand how the World of Souls might react to it, so detection and resonance are not automatically safe benefits. (Chapter 388)
