Robe of Grand Arcanists
The Robe of Grand Arcanists is a growth-capable legendary robe selected by Lucien Evans from the Congress of Magic's treasury after his work on general relativity made him a grand arcanist. It becomes his principal defensive garment, combining high magic resistance with stored spells, automatic protections, faster spiritual recovery, and reduced casting cooldowns. (Chapters 576–577)
History
Selection from the Congress treasury
Hellen leads Lucien to a guarded treasury containing four legendary items after the Congress recognizes his new status. The Robe of Grand Arcanists is a comparatively recent creation by alchemy masters and, unlike the necromantic Boundary of Souls or the transformation-and-astrology Thorny Crown, complements Lucien without duplicating the legendary equipment he plans to make for himself. He chooses it for its broad defensive and spellcasting support, marks its pivot with his signature, and replaces the less practical Immortal Throne robe. Binding the robe nearly drains his spiritual power even after his cognitive world has half-solidified, demonstrating that its stated user restriction is a real danger rather than ceremony. Once bound, it reshapes at his wish into a black double-breasted suit and begins accelerating his recovery. (Chapters 576–577)
Defense in legendary combat and the Realm of Gates
The robe immediately becomes part of Lucien's survival system after his legendary advancement. Against Kritonia, its Elemental Protection forms a translucent elemental shield that absorbs the first force of Heart of Time long enough for Lucien to blink away; the defense still unravels under the level-three legendary sword's time effect, showing that the robe does not erase a large rank gap. Lucien later brings it through the Temple of Spirits and the Realm of Gates, where he repeatedly draws on Elemental Protection, Hellish Ball, saved acceleration and flight spells, and its automatic Elemental Skin and Magic Absorber. During the false Douglas's Eternal Blaze, those automatic effects consume and offset heat that penetrates the Shield of Truth, while later attacks in Mountain Paradise still break through the robe's defenses and wound him. (Chapters 608, 620, 625, 628, 633, and 635–640)
The robe's stored powers are limited resources rather than a permanent barrier. By the time Lucien takes stock in the Realm of Gates, Elemental Protection has been expended, and the high-level defenses require time to recover. Against Mecantron, even the robe's general cooldown reduction cannot make Lucien's separately learned Abrupt Magic Reverse available again within the next several combat rounds. The garment itself endures dangers that harm Lucien's transformed legendary-knight body, yet in those circumstances it cannot necessarily protect the wearer. (Chapters 623, 630, and 703)
Deep-space travel, ocean combat, and continued use
Lucien retains the robe as his rank and research advance. Its elemental shielding supports him during a super-remote space jump with Douglas, though even as a level-three legend he still feels the transit pulling body and soul apart. During the ocean conflict it again raises a multicolored defense, supplies Grandeur Obliteration, and helps him endure the energy storm around Positron Cannon. The encounter leaves both Lucien and his equipment badly damaged, and Douglas orders the robe and the Shield of Truth repaired while recovery remains possible. (Chapters 752, 758–763)
The repair succeeds: a year later the robe is again functioning, taking the appearance of Lucien's black suit and swelling slightly to screen him from hazardous remnants in his laboratory. At its latest appearance, Lucien removes that transformed suit before a dangerous experiment and Fernando gathers it with his other magic items for safekeeping nearby; the scene records no transfer of ownership. (Chapters 783 and 791)
Abilities and properties
- The robe is a level-two legendary item that can grow through a risky upgrade with suitable precious materials. It may be safely used only by legendary sorcerers or archmages whose cognitive worlds have half-solidified; binding it almost exhausts even Lucien, and the item warns that an unqualified wearer's head would explode. (Chapters 576–577)
- It can alter its outward form according to its wearer. Lucien first turns it into a black double-breasted suit, and it retains that restrained modern appearance in his later laboratory work rather than the style of the ancient Magic Empire. (Chapters 577 and 783)
- It reduces the cooldown of spells below legendary by two seconds and legendary spells by roughly one-half to one second depending on difficulty. For Lucien, this removes the cooldown from spells below the ninth circle and shortens the gap between ninth-circle castings, but it does not erase the unusually long recovery of every legendary spell. (Chapters 576 and 703)
- It grants level-two legendary magic resistance, physical defense comparable to a level-nine gold knight, doubled spiritual-power recovery, and immunity to confusion and chaos. These defenses are substantial but not absolute: Kritonia's time power dissolves Elemental Protection, Mountain Paradise's attacks penetrate the robe, and the strange cold around the Realm of Gates can affect Lucien even when the garment itself remains intact. (Chapters 576, 608, 630, and 635)
- When its wearer is attacked, it can automatically trigger the eighth-circle effects Magic Absorber and Elemental Skin. Against Eternal Blaze, the robe detects penetrating temperature and energy and activates both without waiting for a spoken command. (Chapters 576 and 628)
- Its legendary spell reserve provides two uses each per day of Elemental Protection, Space Shackle, Grandeur Obliteration, and Hellish Ball. Elemental Protection gathers elemental light into a translucent shield, while Hellish Ball gives Lucien an offensive area effect; expended uses are unavailable until the item recovers. (Chapters 576, 620, 623, 625, and 640)
- It additionally supplies one ninth-circle Spell Sequencer, two ninth-circle Cracking (Advanced) castings, and three seventh-circle Ruby Reversing Rays, and can save spells such as acceleration and flight for rapid activation. The corpus demonstrates that the saved mobility spells remain useful after several of Lucien's other legendary items are temporarily exhausted. (Chapters 576 and 633)
