History

Award for the discovery of the electron

Morris creates Electron as the newest of the Holm Crown rings while the Will of Elements prepares Lucien's delayed award ceremony. The finished ring consists of two crossed silver circles centered on a brilliant crystal-blue gem, with an inner inscription dating the prize to Year 819 and naming Lucien's contribution. Morris presents it before the Will of Elements as the ring for the discovery that exposed structure within the atom. Lucien accepts it, immediately leaves his spiritual mark, and wears it on the middle finger of his left hand. Morris regards the difficult combination of Anti-magic Ray with the ring's other effects as one of his memorable alchemical achievements. (Chapters 367–368)

Lucien later carries Electron into the Gorse family's underground-palace crisis while disguised as Beaulac. During his conversation with Sophia, he uses close contact and apparent romantic distraction as cover to take out the ring and put it on before the anticipated confrontation. The scene demonstrates how the award remains operational equipment rather than a ceremonial display piece: its protection is valuable precisely when revealing Lucien's real identity or preparing a spell openly would ruin his plan. This is the latest scene to name the ring as a distinct object; the corpus records no subsequent transfer, loss, or destruction. (Chapter 398)

Abilities and properties

• Electron is a level-seven perfect-rank magic item with one layer of seal. A sorcerer who reaches senior-rank spiritual power can unseal and use its full power. (Chapters 367–368)
• It continuously improves calm and concentration, reducing the chance that spellcasting will be interrupted. The stated effect is equivalent to the fifth-circle spell Focus. (Chapter 368)
• It can cast the fifth-circle Lightning Ball twice per day and the seventh-circle Anti-magic Ray twice per day. Anti-magic Ray is the ring's defining enchantment and is difficult to combine with other magic effects, which is why Lucien is impressed by Morris's construction. (Chapters 367–368)
• Before the wearer reaches level six, the sealed ring can still force one casting of its seventh-circle magic. Doing so completely drains the wearer's spiritual power and damages life force, making the emergency option dangerous rather than a substitute for the required rank. (Chapter 368)
