Congus Ring
The Congus Ring is a simple black iron ring made and formerly worn by the demigod-lich Congus. After Lucien Evans and Natasha Violet defeat one of Congus's bodies, they recover the artifact, remove its old spiritual imprint, and turn its formidable necromantic defenses and stored spells against its maker. (Chapters 495–496, 502)
History
Spoils beneath the golden skull
The ring survives when the rest of Congus's equipment is destroyed. Lucien and Natasha find it beneath the remains of his golden skull and infer that it is the legendary item he carried through the battle. Lucien refuses to touch or claim it blindly, recognizing that a powerful sorcerer might preserve a soul or trap inside personal equipment. His first Identification reveals nothing, so he studies the internal structure directly while Natasha guards him with Pale Justice. (Chapters 495–496)
Lucien locates Congus's control core through structural analysis, then deliberately activates the residual imprint so Natasha can cut it away. He installs his own mark afterward, but the ring immediately drains nearly all of his spiritual power; only his stored reserves and the structure of his cognitive world keep the process from destroying him. This dangerous acquisition establishes both his ownership and the item's central restriction: an unqualified wearer can be reduced to an idiot rather than empowered. (Chapter 496)
Turning Congus's weapon against him
Lucien initially believes he cannot use the ring because its wearer must be close to the ninth circle. Instead of forcing it onto another person, he completes the work that substantially strengthens his cognitive world and becomes qualified enough to activate it himself. During Congus's return to Death Valley, the lich expects the ring to be used by the area's false god; Lucien surprises him by casting Spirit Confinement from his own hand. The spell briefly arrests Congus's thinking and creates Natasha's opening to strike with Pale Justice. It does not permanently kill the lich, and the expenditure leaves Lucien nearly without spiritual power. (Chapters 496–502)
A defensive mainstay
Lucien continues to wear the ring, moving other rings to his right hand because the legendary ring remains usable on his supernatural-nullifying left hand. It warns him of an assassination attempt, dissolves a powerful poison, and provides Spirit Confinement against Primous, though that use again leaves him drained and in severe pain. He also lends its protection to Natasha during her testing of Sard, while keeping ownership himself. (Chapters 515, 523, 525, 534–536)
In the World of Souls and Realm of Gates expedition, Lucien repeatedly uses Undead Rampart to absorb legendary attacks. The stored defense can be exhausted, targets immune to necromancy can sharply reduce the ring's offensive value, and Mountain Paradise's power can drain the artifact of color until it recovers. By Chapter 636 it is functional again; in Chapter 791 Lucien removes it with his other equipment before a demigod ritual and Fernando gathers the items for safekeeping. That temporary custody does not indicate a transfer, so the latest established owner remains Lucien. (Chapters 608, 619, 621, 623, 633, 636, 791)
Abilities and properties
- The ring is a level-one senior-rank legendary item. A wearer must be close to the ninth circle; otherwise it drains all spiritual power and can destroy the wearer's mind. Even a qualified but newly capable Lucien suffers exhaustion and pain after major activations. (Chapters 496, 502, 536)
- It grants immunity to first- through eighth-circle magic and to Confinement, Shadow Killer, Energy Drain, Command, and Banshee Howling. It also supplies strong, but not absolute, defense against legendary necromancy and illusion. (Chapter 496)
- It improves physical fitness, recovery, and defense by two levels up to the limit of a gold knight, raises magic resistance by one level up to level two of legendary, and blocks toxins, disease magic below legendary rank, and some necromantic curses. Its demonstrated poison protection does not establish immunity to every nonmagical or legendary toxin. (Chapters 496, 534, 539)
- Advanced Invisibility and Advanced Speed operate automatically unless the wearer deactivates them. The ring can also cast Confinement four times, Undead Scourge three times, and Time Stop twice per day. (Chapter 496)
- Its legendary spells are Spirit Confinement twice per day, Demigod-lich Howling twice per day, and Undead Rampart once per day. The ring stores uses rather than providing continuous access: after Undead Rampart is spent, Lucien must rely on other defenses until recovery. (Chapters 496, 608, 621, 623)
- Undead Rampart forms a wall of souls and bodies capable of canceling a legendary arrow, and it is enhanced in the World of Souls. This does not make it universally effective: a primordial mummy immune to most legendary necromancy sharply limits the ring's offensive options. (Chapters 608, 619, 621)
- Extreme divine power can temporarily suppress the item. In Mountain Paradise it loses its color and cannot be used for a time, but later checks show it restored to working condition; it is depleted, not destroyed. (Chapters 633, 636)
Ownership and custody
| Holder or custodian | Relationship to the item |
|---|---|
| Congus | Creator and original owner; his residual imprint remained in the control core after one of his bodies was defeated. |
| Lucien Evans | Recoverer and current owner; removed Congus's imprint with Natasha's help, installed his own mark, and became the principal wearer. |
| Natasha Violet | Assisted in cleansing the old imprint and at times received the ring's borrowed protection; she did not acquire ownership. |
| Fernando | Brief ritual custodian who gathered Lucien's removed equipment before the demigod-advancement circle; no transfer of ownership is stated. |
