Woods

Woods is a Common Arcana reviewer and elemental researcher whose willingness to test a disputed claim leads him to discover a new element predicted by Lucien's periodic table. Lowercase references to forests and woods elsewhere in the corpus are not appearances by this character. (Chapters 205–213)

Biography

From cautious reviewer to experimental confirmer

Woods first supports Lucien Evans's paper on high-frequency sound because he sees value that other reviewers miss, and the resulting work brings both Lucien and Woods professional attention. When Lucien submits the periodic-table paper, Woods again recognizes promise but refuses to displace already accepted articles and distrusts claims contradicting measurements made by senior authorities. Lucien withdraws rather than delay. Woods does not take that persistence as an insult: during his own laboratory time he retests the atomic weights, finds that the old methods are wrong, and rushes to reverse his editorial judgment. His caution costs Common Arcana the paper, but his willingness to experiment keeps caution from becoming denial. (Chapters 205–207)

Reading the paper further, Woods connects its predicted ore to material collected by Odonkor. He borrows a laboratory, extracts an unknown substance, and repeatedly measures spectral lines, atomic weight, density, and chemical behavior before accepting that it is a new element matching Lucien's predictions. Excitement does not make him abandon attribution: he files his own experimental report, cites Lucien, and secures recognition for the discovery while providing decisive independent support for the periodic table. The consequence is a productive division of credit between theory and verification. (Chapters 208–213)

Appearance and personality

Woods has a light-yellow handlebar mustache and commonly wears a black top hat and long coat. He is refined, ambitious, cautious about journal politics, and candid about the limits of Common Arcana's prestige. He can be patronizing toward a junior arcanist, but he changes course rapidly when experiments contradict him and gives proper citation to the work that guided the discovery. (Chapters 205–209)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Woods is a level-four arcanist and fourth-circle sorcerer. His demonstrated strengths are peer review, elemental measurement, spectroscopic analysis, purification, and careful replication through multiple methods. The corpus does not show his combat magic or provide a broader advancement history. (Chapters 205–213)
