Philosopher

Philosopher is the secret name used by Klein, an Aalto official who studies magic within the city's apprentice circle. His public career eventually reaches senior civic office, while his hidden magical identity survives a Church investigation and later becomes the voice through which he discusses the human failings of clergy on Arcana Voice. Biography

Secret study beneath public office

Philosopher joins the apprentice gatherings that welcome the mysterious Professor, hoping to learn from a sorcerer with access to Arcana. He helps prepare transmutation traps for the group's operation against an evil creature, and one of those traps later blocks a pursuing night watcher long enough for Professor to escape. His willingness to participate exposes him to mortal danger, but he continues studying and eventually becomes a formal sorcerer rather than abandoning magic after the circle is attacked. Years later, the night watcher Clown identifies the city archon Klein as Philosopher and uses the secret to threaten him. Klein instinctively raises Mage Armor and denies the accusation, revealing both his progress and the precarious boundary between his office and forbidden practice. He survives that confrontation and later draws on thirty-eight years as a consul for an Arcana Voice segment about pastors and cardinals as ordinary people with desires. The hidden apprentice thus becomes a public interpreter of the system that once hunted him. (Chapters 298–301 and 447)

Personality and skills

Philosopher is inquisitive, cooperative, and careful about the division between his identities. As an apprentice he sets alchemical or transmutation traps that turn stone to mud; as a sorcerer he can cast Mage Armor. His long civic service also gives him political observation and storytelling experience, but the corpus does not establish his circle, spell specialties, or later combat power.
