A guardian's concealed bid for supremacy

Lankshear first receives the Congress investigators as the court's proud chief guard, guiding them through the forest and presenting himself as part of the response to corruption. In fact, he has coordinated magic circles across the abyssal gap, exploited the hatred cultivated by Nature's Abhorrence, and arranged evidence to frame Ferragond. His plan depends on Lucien and Malfurion leaving for the abyss while Atlant watches for data, giving Lankshear time to turn Ferragond into a container for primeval devils. He justifies the risk to the entire clan as the price of gaining demigod power and restoring elvish conquest. (Chapters 670–682)

The plan fails because Aglaea senses what he stole from Nature's Heart and reverses the ritual. The negative feelings Lankshear gathered merge into him instead of Ferragond, while the queen's Arrow of Nature destroys the resulting dark figure and the investigation names Lankshear as the true culprit.
