Ell

Ell is the identity adopted by the weakened false god Avando while rebuilding his religion. Encouraged by Francis, he changes from a local god of fire and destruction into a claimed universal savior, absorbs rival godhoods, and creates a counterfeit Mountain Paradise. His growing faith also erodes his independent judgment, allowing both a World of Souls consciousness and Francis's ritual to use him. (Chapters 467–475 and 499–503)

Biography

Reinventing a defeated god

Ell begins under pressure: Avando's kingdom has fallen, the Barril faithful are dwindling, and the old practice of preaching through fear no longer sustains rebellion. Rather than merely repeat the failed doctrine, Ell accepts Francis's proposal that he be presented as a new God of Revival, Fertility, and Redemption born from Avando's flames. He then targets neighboring godhoods whose domains can reinforce that identity. The strategy gains followers and makes other false gods hesitate, but it also rewards Ell for believing claims that exceed his actual strength. When an unseen spell removes the Lord of Underworld during battle, Ell interprets it as proof of his own omnipotence instead of evidence of outside intervention. (Chapters 467–475)

Ell survives wounds that destroy his body, absorbs rival powers, and builds a divine domain modeled on Mountain Paradise. By the time Lucien Evans and Natasha confront him, the domain can raise him close to gold-knight strength, but his clergy-derived resistances remain uneven and Lucien subdues him through mental effects outside those protected areas. During the planned ambush against Congus, Ell abruptly breaks that control because the main consciousness of a mysterious World of Souls existence has occupied him. Francis then completes the deeper trap: generations of prayers, doctrines, and symbols have made Ell's godhood resemble the God of Truth closely enough that Mountain Paradise draws him in and assimilates him. Ell's pursuit of universal divinity therefore ends with the loss of the separate self he was trying to exalt. (Chapters 499–503)

Appearance and personality

Ell appears in a white robe and a crown or garland of olive flowers. Later, holy light flows over his skin and the seven layers of his constructed paradise appear in his eyes. He is adaptive enough to abandon a failing doctrine, but validation rapidly becomes credulity and grandiosity. The stronger his gathered faith grows, the more its believers' expectations distort his decisions. (Chapters 467–468 and 500–503)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Ell's power derives from godhood, gathered faith, and the divine domain tied to his clergy. He can issue Commands whose effects correspond to divine-like spells, survive fatal injury by blurring life and death, resist magic associated with necromancy, earth, and hypnotism, and borrow enough power from his domain to approach gold-knight strength. These advantages are conditional: outside the right clergy his resistances are incomplete, mental attacks can exploit his distorted consciousness, and the very faith that empowers him makes him vulnerable to assimilation by the deity his religion imitates.
