Clown

Clown is an Aalto Night Watch captain and level-five grand knight whose puppet-like Blessing makes him an expert in capture, interrogation, and assassination. Grief over fallen night watchers and distrust of the Church's concessions to nobles turn his pursuit of Professor into an obsessive campaign against Lucien. (Chapters 84–89 and 287–304)

Biography

From defender of the Night Watch to Professor's target

Clown leads the ambush against Professor and survives the catastrophic underground battle in which most of his thirty-person team dies. The losses deepen a belief he already holds: night watchers sacrifice themselves against darkness while Church leaders and nobles bargain away the value of those lives. Years later he recognizes the coincidences connecting Lucien Evans and Professor and chooses an illegal private interrogation rather than wait for evidence acceptable to the Inquisition. When Natasha uses the attack to demand his execution, Clown interprets the decision as proof that the Church has abandoned its loyal servants. His desire for vindication then overrides his own awareness that Professor may be setting a trap. (Chapters 84–89 and 287–300)

Clown seizes Viscount Klein, uses his Blessing to compel information, and follows Professor to Lucien's empty villa. The apparent killing of Lucien brings Natasha down on him; she cuts away half his body with the Sword of Truth, while Lucien's deception makes the Night Watch blame Professor for the musician's death. Divine healing cannot reverse the soul-cutting wound. In his final hours Clown admits that his Blessing once drove him to kill innocent people, but insists that a dervish's teaching gave him a purpose: live in darkness to fight darkness. He dies repeating the Night Watch oath, never understanding that Lucien spared him long enough for Rhine to observe the dissident cardinal who comes to recruit his surviving comrades. Appearance and personality

Clown wears a colorful costume, plain black gloves, and a fixed grinning clown mask over black eyes. He is disciplined enough to reason carefully and keep moving after a mortal wound, but his dark Blessing and accumulated grief feed paranoia, cruelty, and fixation. His devotion is sincere; the tragedy is that he treats sincerity as justification for coercion and killing without sufficient proof. (Chapters 289 and 298–304)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Clown's grand-knight Blessing produces invisible puppet strings. They can seize a target's limbs, pierce internal organs, control facial muscles and eventually the will, seal spiritual power, and support Clown's movement through the air or darkness. A substitution effect can turn his body into a string-bound doll to survive an attack. The ability is not absolute: sufficient knight strength can tear the strings, surprise and superior rank can overwhelm him, and the Sword of Truth cuts both his body and soul so thoroughly that potions and divine healing fail.
