Atlant
Atlant Forman, the Eye of Curse, is a legendary archmage of the Congress of Magic whose specialty lies in curses, illusion, and the mind. Usually quiet and seen with his eyes closed, he combines field work with Highest Council governance and remains an active defender of the Congress through the story's final chapter. (Chapters 350, 554, 662–688, and 910)
Biography
Council service and the elvish investigation
Atlant first appears among the legendary sorcerers gathered to assess disruptive atomic theory. His later service is more direct: Douglas assigns him to watch Sard during the struggle over Holm, and Atlant opens his eyes to bring his unusual perception into use. As a council member he supports expanded education while warning that workshops will resist paying for apprentices, and he accepts the experimental results behind the probabilistic microscopic model while continuing to hope for hidden causes. These positions show a reserved but institutionally engaged scholar rather than a detached curse specialist. (Chapters 350, 554, 582, and 662)
During the crisis in Stroop Forest, Atlant joins the legendary investigation, locates dangers around the abyssal gap, and provides a second route to the truth if Lucien does not take the mission. His willingness to observe the risky demigod-related scheme without attempting it himself reflects both curiosity and caution. He remains part of the Highest Council during the defense of Allyn and finally appears beside Raymond as a black magic tower rises in Calais, demonstrating continued action on the Congress's behalf. (Chapters 674–688, 792, and 910)
Appearance and personality
Atlant is introduced with perpetually closed eyes and a quiet manner. When he opens them, they seem to contain an intoxicating world. His speech is gentle and often smiling, but his analysis of institutions and dangerous research is pragmatic; he is interested in what minds and evidence reveal without volunteering for the most corrupting route to power. (Chapters 350, 554, 582, and 662)
Magic and abilities
As the Eye of Curse, Atlant specializes in curses and mental or illusion magic. His published view is that understanding a target's weakness can implant false memory without an illusion spell, suggesting that psychology and manipulation are central to his method. He can monitor a powerful target such as Sard and perceive hidden anomalies when he opens his eyes. The corpus establishes those applications, but not a complete list of spells, costs, or counters. (Chapters 382, 554, and 682)
