Adam

Adam is a companion encountered by Lucien during the Nightmare King's constructed ordeal. Within the dream he appears to be a famous knight imprisoned by an old witch, but Stennis later reveals that Adam and the other captives were roles generated from Lucien's fear and expectations rather than independent prisoners. (Chapters 314–324)

Biography

Companion and mirror in the Nightmare King's trial

Adam first contacts Lucien Evans through a loose brick between prison cells. He understands that desire can motivate escape while also blinding adventurers, and his calm experience helps Lucien evaluate the witch's tower instead of rushing at every apparent opportunity. Once the captives break free, Adam accepts Lucien's plan and uses Dark Assimilation against an ancient golem despite knowing the technique will exhaust him for minutes. The choice creates the opening the group needs and presents Lucien with a capable ally whose trust he must use responsibly. (Chapters 314–322)

The conclusion reinterprets the entire relationship. Stennis explains that he played the old witch and that Adam, Carina, Alva, Ophelia, and Bullard were also parts of the role, shaped in part by Lucien's own fear. Adam's courage and advice still affect Lucien inside the trial, but they do not establish a separate knight continuing beyond it. His narrative function is to pressure Lucien into coordinating with others and committing to action under uncertainty, allowing the Nightmare King to force Lucien's latent soul development forward. (Chapters 323–324)

Appearance and personality

Adam appears as a well-known, self-possessed male knight whose reputation makes younger adventurers nervous. He speaks philosophically about desire and remains willing to expose himself to danger for a coordinated escape. Because Stennis constructed the role, these traits belong to the trial's presentation and cannot be treated as evidence of an independent biography outside it. (Chapters 314–324)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Within the dream Adam possesses the top dark Blessing Dark Assimilation. It turns nearby matter into darkness and devours it, making the technique effective against a powerful golem, but leaves him exhausted for several minutes after use. His blood and flesh can also serve as the darkness, blood, and consciousness components in Lucien's emergency necromantic circle. These are demonstrated mechanics inside Stennis's dream, not confirmed powers of a separate real-world knight. (Chapters 319–324)
