The Dimensional Compass is a precision magitech device that identifies the plane its bearer occupies and indicates the direction needed to reach another one. Its one-day commission provides Dominic's first close lesson in advanced magical assembly under Pops, while later references establish that planar travellers still regard the design as a practical route-finding tool. History
An impatient mage commissions Pops to make the compass within a single day. Pops uses the project to teach Dominic that the object is not a ship's compass: it must recognize planes and guide movement between them. The completed form is an ornate, precisely fitted cube with no visible seams. When supplied with magical power, it glows, confirming activation before the client departs with it. (Chapters 8–9)
The unusual customer remains memorable enough for Dominic to recognize his image hundreds of chapters later. Subsequent discussions treat dimensional compasses as tools that ancient dragons or other planar travellers might use to remove people from the known world, and Dominic confirms that Pops can build another when an expedition considers crossing between worlds. Those discussions establish the design's accepted function, but not the original commission's later route or owner. (Chapters 342, 470, 632, and 636)
