General Alator
General Alator is a retired officer who rebuilds his family's life in Wistover and becomes the Duchy's militia commander. His experience turns scattered former guards and farmers into an organized defensive force capable of supporting Dominic Wavemates during a monster assault.
Biography
From displaced elder to militia leader
Alator arrives alive despite reports that he fell at Causter, but his family has little beyond its farm and prior experience as store clerks. When Dominic needs someone to train a local militia, the paid appointment offers Alator a way to support that family while restoring him to useful command. He establishes higher standards than the residents know, argues that proper militia also need armour and tabards, and selects proven former city-guard officers alongside Omar Khalil, Captain Brass, and a half-Ogre woman as team leaders. The resulting structure gives Wistover a trained local force rather than an armed crowd. (Chapters 232–267)
Defence against the monster incursion
When mortar fire signals that Dominic's force is fighting beyond town, Alator leads spear-bearing militia to relieve him. Back in field command, he monitors the airship-dock situation, accepts a dangerous assignment without protest, and warns that continued advance will leave the unit surrounded. His proposed turtle-shell spear wall and subsequent formation shifts keep the militia organized while Amie's barrier prevents Goblins from passing their spears. The battle validates the training program: the retired general and civilian force can now function under pressure as part of Wistover's defence. (Chapters 441–443)
Appearance and personality
Alator is an elderly man and the grandfather of the younger Alator family members; the corpus gives no further stable physical description. He is practical about his family's poverty, exacting about military standards, and calm enough to accept an unfavourable battlefield assignment with a salute. In combat he barks orders and readily returns to the habits of command. (Chapters 232, 240, 266, 314, and 442)
Magic, skills, and craft
The corpus does not establish personal magic for Alator. His demonstrated expertise is military organization: he assesses recruits, delegates instruction through experienced captains, forms units around selected leaders, and commands spear formations under encirclement pressure. The turtle-shell formation depends on disciplined troops maintaining a defensive wall; Amie's area barrier reinforces it, but that spell is hers rather than his. (Chapters 266–267, 285, and 441–443)
Relationships
- Dominic Wavemates: Dominic helps the Alator family settle, hires Alator to train the militia, and later relies on him to bring that force into a major battle. (Chapters 232–267 and 441–443)
- The Alator family: Alator's first concern is establishing a viable life for his family. The militia salary and farm make their position comfortable enough to move beyond mere subsistence. (Chapters 233–266)
- Amie: Alator arranges the militia behind its spears while Amie adds an area barrier, combining conventional formation discipline with magical protection. (Chapters 442–443)
Items
- Militia armour, tabards, and spears: Alator identifies armour and tabards as requirements for a proper militia and later leads a unit equipped with spears. The equipment belongs to the Duchy's force rather than being his named personal property. (Chapters 266 and 441–443)
