Thunderstrider

The Thunderstrider is a renowned Black Scale military airship used as Mazdari’s mobile transport, command platform, and high-altitude base.

History

Legendary transport across the front

By the time Mazdari boards it for a covert journey, Thunderstrider has completed more than fifty missions between the eastern and southern fronts without crashing and is regarded as a symbol of victory. Its high-altitude performance and Mazdari’s magic offer a chance to cross the Union Kingdom’s defenses, although the crew knows the route may still force them into battle. (Chapters 182–183)

Crash, survival, and repair

Enemy action destroys much of the envelope and forces the airship down inside Union territory. Its tilting thrusters convert the crash into a survivable landing, while onboard Wizards synthesize hydrogen and prepare repairs. Magic minimizes the final impact because technology alone cannot do so, but raising the whole vessel magically would consume excessive catalysts, preparation, and mental effort. (Chapters 185–187)

Continuing operations

Thunderstrider returns to service and continues carrying Mazdari, agents, soldiers, and converts through hostile regions. In the later war it operates as a multi-power-source platform above Rasdasil and leads Imperial airships during the evacuation from the Sky Castle battle. (Chapters 188–200) (Chapters 230–242)

Abilities and properties

  • The airship can fly at high altitude, and Mazdari’s magic can raise its operating ceiling and speed beyond its ordinary performance. Without him aboard, some Union airships are faster. (Chapter 182) (Chapter 230)
  • Its design combines several power sources to keep passengers and missions functioning under extreme conditions rather than maximizing a single performance measure. (Chapter 237)
  • Rotatable helical-wing thrusters can point downward to slow an uncontrolled descent, allowing the hull to survive even after catastrophic envelope damage. (Chapter 186)
  • Wizards can synthesize replacement hydrogen and use magic for a soft landing, but full magical lift is uneconomical because it consumes large quantities of catalysts, circle-work, time, and collective mental power. (Chapters 186–187)
  • The craft is durable, not invulnerable: it can be intercepted, forced down, and immobilized long enough for enemy armies to surround its repair site. (Chapters 183–187)
