Moving Castle

The Moving Castle is Great Ashurada’s colossal many-legged Rakshasa fortress, captured by Black Scale and repurposed as a mobile base and artillery platform.

History

Ancient fortress and airborne capture

The Pantheon identifies the Moving Castle as one of the ancient ruins and tracks its route across the fourth continent. Because its metal legs are too strong for the expedition’s available gunpowder and magic, Vasen plans an airborne assault with captured Helix Wings. He, Mazdari, and the boarding force seize the control room and stop the castle, but the operation becomes a battle against Ashurada and leaves its walls heavily damaged. (Chapters 157–171)

Rebuilt weapon of the Empire

Black Scale repairs the castle while moving it, using Ashurada’s Dragon body as heavy construction power. The restored fortress breaks the Fabirang Union’s assault, blocks Sha-Cha’s retreat along the river, and later serves Vaseniol as a recurring transport and supply connection. By the modern era, the Empire formally possesses it and mounts the immense cannon Unrivaled on its structure. (Chapters 172–177) (Chapters 229–236)

Long-range artillery platform

The Moving Castle duels the Union Kingdom’s Sky Castle from extreme range. Its artillery is inaccurate by itself, but Sung-Woon’s control of the sky redirects the shell through atmospheric winds, and Kyle’s command later infuses a projectile with Divinity to destroy Hegemonia’s controlled body. (Chapters 237–249)

Abilities and properties

  • The fortress stands on a massive stone foundation carried by irregular articulated metal legs. Reconnaissance initially counts twenty-five legs, while the castle seen during the assault has twenty-three; breaking roughly one third was estimated to stop it, but even the smaller legs resisted ordinary explosives. (Chapters 163–166)
  • A remote tower contains the mechanical control room. Pulling its levers can halt the castle, and its suspension is stable enough that movement is barely felt on the ramparts. (Chapters 166–167)
  • It travels slightly faster than a walking person and can continue without sleep, producing a substantial daily range and allowing it to intercept forces constrained by winding rivers. (Chapter 174)
  • Its walls and elevated gunports make a direct siege difficult, but airborne troops, creations, or climbers can bypass the legs. Damage to the walls therefore remains a serious capture risk until repaired. (Chapters 165–173)
  • Unrivaled gives the castle strategic-range firepower, and the legs can brace its recoil in water. The weapon’s native accuracy is poor, so precise hits require observation, favorable conditions, or divine control of the projectile’s flight. (Chapters 236–249)
