Forget-Me-Bloom

The Forget-Me-Bloom is a rare Mangul herb used in the Empty Sky trial; it qualifies as a storyline exception because its effects drive Redin’s ordeal and emergence as the Apostle of Ecstasy, not because it is a lasting personal possession.

History

Provision of the Empty Sky trial

Candidates for the Overflowing God’s priesthood enter deep tunnels with water, simple food, a pickaxe, and a Forget-Me-Bloom. After consuming the herb, they must dig toward a sky they can no longer reliably locate. The ordeal can last years across many candidates, and even under supervision it causes eliminations and deaths. (Chapter 114)

Redin’s consumption and transformation

Redin receives the herb during a ceremonial imitation but becomes trapped in a manipulated tunnel. Hunger forces him to eat it for energy. Its increasingly severe disorientation makes him mistake floor for ceiling, experience false tactile orientation, and continue digging without knowing whether he is approaching freedom or death. That crisis allows the joint creation of Wisdom and Jang-Wan to guide him out and reshape him into an apostle; the herb’s effects later wear off. (Chapters 114–115)

Abilities and properties

• Consumption disrupts left-right, up-down, and temporal orientation, weakens consciousness, causes intense dizziness, and can produce tactile hallucinations about which part of the body touches the ground. (Chapters 114–115)
• The herb contains enough nutrients and energy to replace a full meal, which lets a trapped participant continue digging even as each dose worsens disorientation. (Chapters 114–115)
• Redin initially suspects the effect may be weaker on a Troll than on a Kobold, but his later inversion and hallucinations disprove that confidence. The source does not establish a safe dose. (Chapter 115)
• It is consumable rather than a permanent companion, weapon, or owned relic, and its effects wear off after Redin’s ordeal. (Chapter 115)
