Biography

A king who sought power through forbidden knowledge

Delmardin Busa ruled Asbestos for twenty-four years and enforced enough central authority that its aristocrats feared him even when ordinary citizens did not regard him as a dark lord. Seeking a path to greater power, he supported the alchemist Mazdari and challenged him to produce the means by which Delmardin might become a Wizard. His patronage therefore tied the monarchy’s ambitions to dangerous research rather than to a publicly demonstrated power of his own. (Chapters 96–97, 113)

Delmardin used his concealed son Redin as a proxy at the Empty Sky Festival and as an agent for tasks the king preferred not to perform openly. That arrangement helped Redin build the force and reputation with which he later confronted the throne. When Delmardin came to suspect that the Overflowing God was influencing his son, he tried to punish him; Redin instead killed his father, destroyed half the palace, and seized Asbestos, turning the king’s secret instrument into the cause of his fall. Appearance and personality

Delmardin is identified as a Troll and a long-ruling king, but the corpus does not give a detailed account of his height, clothing, facial features, or royal regalia. His conduct presents him as forceful, suspicious, and politically indirect: he concentrates authority, sponsors perilous work that may enhance his power, and relies on a hidden heir for coercive assignments. His eventual attempt to discipline Redin also shows that his caution came too late to control the danger he had cultivated.

Powers and abilities

• Royal authority: Delmardin can direct the resources of Asbestos, intimidate its nobles, and sponsor specialized research. These are political and institutional powers, not a demonstrated supernatural ability.
• Use of proxies: Keeping Redin’s parentage concealed lets Delmardin send him into politically compromising situations with some distance from the crown. The strategy fails once Redin becomes powerful enough to act independently.
• Unconfirmed magical ambition: Delmardin wants Mazdari to make him a Wizard, but the supplied chapters do not show that he completes such a transformation, names a Domain for him, or demonstrates a miracle.
