Greg

Greg is one of Alexander Morrison's school friends and a secretly implanted Gu cultivator. Chronic pain, low natural talent, and outside control turn his apparent friendship into an assassination attempt, forcing Alexander to test whether personal loyalty can survive deliberate betrayal.

Biography

Friendship under hidden pressure

Greg celebrates Alexander's breakthrough with Helen and Zeus, joking loudly about wagers and arguing as he normally does with the group. His agitation around the auction first resembles jealousy over his unstable relationship with Alissa Harmony, but a stress ball conceals constant pain from practicing a cultivation path alien to his body. That suffering and the Gu inside him create the leverage behind his coming betrayal. (Chapters 42–45)

Failed assassination

Alexander deliberately leaks his breakthrough schedule to expose disloyal people, and Greg becomes the friend placed close enough to strike. The Gu lets someone of limited talent exceed his natural ceiling, but its coercive cost means Greg is not acting from an ordinary contest for advancement. Alexander detects the attempt and survives; Greg dies, leaving the betrayal as evidence of how enemies weaponized both ambition and friendship around Alexander. (Chapters 44–48 and 52)

Appearance and personality

Greg is unusually tall and extremely skinny, a build that makes his second-step Qi Training cultivation difficult to guess at a glance. In company he is boisterous, competitive, and fond of betting, while his recurring breakups with Alissa feed an insecure bravado. Squeezing a stress ball exposes tension beneath that humor, later revealed as the pain and fear surrounding his Gu-driven mission. (Chapters 42–46)

Gu-assisted cultivation

Greg houses Gu insects that share his body's nutrients and spiritual energy. Because he is not naturally suited to the practice, their presence causes continuous pain, but it also allows his low innate talent to exceed its normal limits. The arrangement is therefore both power source and weakness: damaging, invasive, and tied to the control that turns him against Alexander rather than a freely mastered cultivation art. Qi Training and infiltration

At introduction Greg is at the second step of Qi Training, well below Helen and Alexander, so proximity and surprise matter more than direct strength. His years inside Alexander's social circle give him access an obvious enemy could not obtain. Once Alexander anticipates betrayal, that advantage collapses, and Greg lacks the cultivation or independence needed to complete the assassination. (Chapters 42–48)
