Carl
Carl is the guildmaster of Hearthwood's Wolf Hunters' Guild and the protective father of Martha. He is distinct from Captain Carl of the Knightmares and the other men named Carl elsewhere in the corpus.
Biography
A protective guildmaster under hypnosis
Carl first confronts Kai LuForia after finding him alone with Martha in the guild's examination room. Once Martha explains that Kai is a promising new hunter introduced by Paul and George, Carl's suspicion becomes enthusiastic hospitality. That rapidly softened trust makes him susceptible to Kai's hypnosis: Carl invites the stranger into his small home and accepts him sharing Martha's room, a decision the narration explicitly attributes to altered judgment. He nevertheless continues performing his ordinary work, closing the guild, managing its office, and supporting the household's move to a larger property. (Chapters 5–8, 20–22)
When Carl learns that Martha is pregnant, he remains inside the imposed family arrangement rather than mounting the protective response his introduction would predict. He later welcomes Erika and Vanira into the expanded home. His latest role is therefore that of an early household elder and guild connection, but the foundation of his acceptance remains coercive and undisclosed to him. (Chapters 15, 20–22)
Appearance and personality
Carl is a tall, muscular, bald adult man with a scar across his scalp, a rough-looking face, and a serious aura. His clothing and eye color are not specified. These features distinguish Martha's father from the unrelated Carls later encountered by Kai. (Chapter 5)
He is protective, imposing, affectionate toward Martha, and proud of his guild. He can become jovial once reassured and values respectable hunters, but hypnosis overrides the caution central to his first appearance. (Chapters 5–8)
Powers and abilities
Carl manages hunter registration, testing, sales, and branch operations. The corpus does not show him fighting, casting magic, or holding a formal mana tier, so no combat ability can be assigned. His demonstrated strengths are authority, administration, and knowledge of hunter procedure. (Chapters 5–8, 15)

- Erika and Vanira: Carl helps incorporate Kai's rescued mother and sister into the new home. (Chapters 20–22)
Items
- Guild records and testing materials: Carl controls the Wolf Hunters' administrative resources, but no notable personal weapon or artifact is identified. (Chapters 5–8, 15)
