Liebing

Liebing is Lan XiChen's xiao, an end-blown flute used for calming music and for sound-based restraint in combat.

History

Headless corpse encounter

Lan XiChen raises Liebing against the headless fierce corpse tracked by Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi. Its soft, serene tone briefly makes the corpse pause and listen before the struggle continues. (Chapter 46)

Sound of Lucidity

At the Cloud Recesses, Lan XiChen plays Liebing while reflecting on his parents and the history of the secluded cottage. The instrument's ordinary timbre is described as warm and graceful, though the performance carries his troubled emotions. He later brings it when practicing Sound of Lucidity. (Chapters 64 and 125)

Guanyin Temple

Lan XiChen retains Liebing while held at Guanyin Temple, but cannot use it effectively after losing his spiritual powers. Once able to act, he plays it alongside Wangji to halt and restrain Nie MingJue's fierce corpse. (Chapters 98–99 and 107)

Abilities and properties

• Liebing channels music that can briefly arrest a fierce corpse's movement. (Chapters 46 and 107)
• Its effectiveness depends on Lan XiChen's spiritual power; merely carrying it is of little help when that power is suppressed. (Chapter 99)
• Its natural timbre is soft, warm, and graceful. (Chapter 64)
