Soul Calibre
Soul Calibre is an original magic book from Meltor's Zero Library and the eighth-Circle astral spell recorded within it. The work teaches a "sword of the soul" that attacks an existence's spiritual structure, allowing its user to bypass forms of immortality that ordinary physical destruction cannot overcome.
History
Selection from the Zero Library
Before confronting Jerem's undead forces, Theodore Miller searches Meltor's Zero Library for magic suited to warlocks and incorporeal undead. Soul Calibre is one of four books he selects. Gluttony's Appraisal rates it as a Treasure, identifies a possible interaction with Umbra, and requires eight Circles plus at least medium sensitivity to souls. Theodore places it in Gluttony's inventory so that he can read it before deciding on consumption. (Chapter 313)
After reading the four works, Theodore consumes Soul Calibre. His high understanding gives him the spell, raises his proficiency after his astral affinity reaches its limit, and begins a Synchro with the book's author, Reynolds Spencer. Through that inherited episode, Theodore witnesses the magic swordsman form Soul Calibre on Asurahi's Resounding Sword and use the astral edge to defeat a three-headed demon whose body lies outside ordinary physical law. The memory also demonstrates a limit: the attack can force the foreign being out of the world but lacks the divine authority needed to annihilate it completely. (Chapter 320)
Abilities and properties
- Astral destruction: Soul Calibre interferes with the astral system of the material world and cuts the spiritual basis of a target rather than relying only on damage to its body. (Chapter 313)
- Anti-undead application: Appraisal states that the spell can cut through the immortality of senior undead, the practical reason Theodore chooses it for the coming war. (Chapter 313)
- Weapon manifestation: Reynolds Spencer demonstrates the spell as a luminous edge extended through his magic sword. The episode shows one expert application, not a requirement that every caster use the same weapon or technique. (Chapter 320)
- Dimensional limits: The spell can heavily damage and expel a demon that exists beyond local physical laws, but the witnessed use cannot destroy that being outright without power on the level of a god. (Chapter 320)
- Demanding acquisition: The original requires an eighth-Circle caster, sensitivity to souls, and exceptional inspiration. Gluttony's consumption lets Theodore acquire the spell because he meets the stated conditions and has understood the book well. (Chapters 313 and 320)
