Ring of Muspelheim
The Ring of Muspelheim is the power that Gluttony extracts when it consumes Laevateinn. Rather than a detachable ring, it initially appears as a sun-shaped mark on Theodore Miller's left hand and gives him staged access to the fire sealed inside the legendary grimoire.
History
Inheritance from Laevateinn
After Theodore, Sylvia, and Ellenoa overcome Laevateinn in Elvenheim, Gluttony consumes the defeated grimoire. Its appraisal identifies Laevateinn as a seal on the realm of Muspelheim and names the Ring of Muspelheim among the powers transferred to Theodore. The inheritance also raises his affinity for fire magic, halves its mana cost, and gives him resistance to fire according to the strength of the attack. (Chapter 111)
The transfer does not make Theodore an immediate master of the power. The appraisal says that an eighth- or ninth-Circle magician is needed to control it fully, while Theodore has only just reached the sixth Circle. El-Mare treats the new mark as dangerously excessive for a mortal and warns that careless release could burn Theodore as well as everything near him. Theodore therefore leaves the greater power sealed while he develops the capacity to use it. (Chapter 111)
Controlled manifestation
By the encounter with the hydra in the East, Theodore can draw on the Ring through the Artificial Yin and Yang imprinted on his heart. He commands Muspelheim's fire to manifest as white swords and spears, choosing it because the hydra requires divine or otherworldly flame rather than ordinary fire magic. The summoned fire is not governed by the material world's usual rules: it burns in a vacuum and crosses the boundary between matter and non-matter. The attack proves effective, though the ignition of the hydra's poison also produces an enormous secondary explosion. (Chapter 342)
Abilities and limitations
- Muspelheim access: The Ring opens a route to the realm of fire sealed in Laevateinn and allows its flames to be released in stages. It is an inherited function of the consumed grimoire, not a conventional piece of jewelry. (Chapter 111)
- Fire affinity and efficiency: Consumption pushes Theodore's affinity for fire magic to its limit and halves the magic power required by fire spells. (Chapter 111)
- Fire resistance: Fire below Theodore's level is ignored, while stronger fire is reduced rather than automatically nullified. The appraisal defines the protection comparatively, so it does not establish absolute immunity. (Chapter 111)
- Otherworldly flame: At a later level of mastery, Theodore manifests white weapons of fire that remain active in a vacuum and affect both material and immaterial targets. (Chapter 342)
- Control threshold: The inherited power initially exceeds Theodore's capacity. Its own appraisal places true mastery at the eighth or ninth Circle, and El-Mare warns that premature use can consume its wielder and surroundings. (Chapter 111)
