Marquis Fergana

Marquis Fergana is one of Soldun's master magicians, a lightning specialist drawn into Duke Cornwall's rebellion through his daughter's marriage. Defeat leaves him alive but stripped of freedom under Prince Elsid's Oath of Obedience.

Biography

Eastern Legacies, Quattro, and the Soldun Civil War

Fergana supports Cornwall despite considering himself loyal to Soldun, repeatedly explaining his choice through pressure involving his daughter. At Babarino Plains his lightning overwhelms ordinary soldiers and he confronts Theodore Miller with immediate use of Sorcery. Theodore turns into lightning, lets Fergana's attack pass harmlessly, and breaks his ribs and lung with a close strike. Fergana escapes in lightning form but cannot return to the campaign; after Cornwall's collapse, he is captured without resistance. (Chapters 215–228)

Elsid judges that executing one of Soldun's few masters would further weaken the kingdom, yet cannot forgive a powerful noble who had the capacity to resist the rebellion. He therefore has an Oath of Obedience carved into Fergana's heart, making resistance to the royal family impossible. Fergana loses control of much of his former estate and becomes a royal agent rather than an independent marquis. (Chapter 229)

East Continent and the Northern War

Fergana does not directly participate in Theodore's East Continent journey or northern war. Theodore's later battles use the marquis as a benchmark for the effectiveness of lightning-form movement and for Theodore's own growth beyond their duel. (Chapters 238, 258, 266, and 269)

Jerem's Return and the Great Forest

When Theodore considers reinforcements against the Four Horsemen, he concludes that Fergana would be outmatched and risk conversion into an undead puppet. Fergana is consequently not summoned into the Lairon operation; the mention confirms his survival and continuing availability to Soldun. (Chapter 311)

Prometheus and the Eastern Apocalypse

Five years later Fergana accepts personal responsibility for having followed Cornwall and his daughter, though he remains painfully aware of the obedience brand. Acting on Elsid's order, he travels to Meltor and reports a growing monster wave from the southern swamp. He has explored the outskirts himself and detected a wide mental pressure that repels soldiers. His report prompts Theodore to investigate during the southern expedition, making Fergana an effective royal messenger even under coercion. (Chapters 338–339)

Appearance and personality

Fergana is an older nobleman with a mustache and luxurious robes. He is proud of decades spent mastering lightning and initially treats Theodore as a dangerous but beatable junior. Defeat and bondage leave him more subdued; by Chapter 339 he feels jealousy, resentment, awe, and responsibility together, but explicitly refuses to blame others for the choice that placed him under Cornwall. Magic, abilities, and martial skills

Fergana is a seven-circle magician whose Sorcery converts his magic power and body into actual lightning. This grants lightning-speed casting, reflexes, attacks strong enough to melt metal, and zigzag movement even after grave injury. The specialization also creates a decisive weakness against Theodore's own lightning transformation: electric attacks cannot harm a body temporarily made of the same phenomenon, while Fergana remains vulnerable to physical impact.
