Heinrich

Heinrich is a retired Kargas court scholar whose famous library and respect for original books make him both Theodore's auction rival and a valued partner in exchanging knowledge.

Biography

Elvenheim, Kargas, and the Pirate Archipelago

Heinrich competes with Theodore Miller at Sipoto's underground auctions, bidding aggressively for original texts but withdrawing from Introduction to Elemental Magic II after recognizing Theodore's determination. The decision lets Theodore obtain a work important to his elemental development. Neither man knows the other's identity at the time, but their mutual willingness to spend heavily on knowledge creates the basis for later respect. (Chapters 129–130)

Eastern Legacies, Quattro, and the Soldun Civil War

Years later Theodore seeks Heinrich's private collection and arrives as Viscount Brahms threatens to kill the old scholar for refusing to surrender the Book of Clouds. After Theodore stops the attack, Heinrich quickly recognizes him despite disguise. Initial fear that another magician will simply demand his books gives way when Theodore offers accurate eastern translations in exchange, respecting Heinrich as a scholar rather than a helpless owner. (Chapters 231–234)

The two barter dozens of books according to intellectual value rather than market price and discover a strong kinship across their age and professions. Heinrich hosts Theodore and provides access to his hidden library, enabling the magician to acquire the Book of Clouds and related knowledge. Heinrich remains a civilian collector: Theodore's later uses of that knowledge are consequences of their exchange, not spells Heinrich can cast. (Chapters 234–237)

Appearance and personality

Heinrich has white hair, a white beard, deeply wrinkled skin, a straight posture, and an intense youthful gaze. He is stubborn in bidding, courteous when treated fairly, and willing to spend extraordinary sums on books. Years of coercion by magicians make him cynical and cautious, but genuine scholarly respect rapidly restores his generosity and enthusiasm. (Chapters 129–130 and 233–235)

Magic, abilities, and martial skills

Heinrich is explicitly a scholar rather than a combatant or magician. His strengths are broad reading, appraisal of translations, memory for rare texts, inference, and decades of collection work. He recognizes Circle Sealing and identifies Theodore from circumstantial details, but observation does not grant him that magic. His lack of fighting ability leaves him vulnerable to Brahms despite wealth and former court status. (Chapters 233–235)

Relationships

• Theodore Miller: Heinrich begins as Theodore's unknown auction rival, later becomes a fellow bibliophile, and exchanges rare western originals for Theodore's eastern translations. Their respect is grounded in shared hunger for knowledge rather than rank. (Chapters 129–130 and 231–237)
• Heathcliff: Heinrich's household and library bring Theodore into contact with Heathcliff, but the corpus gives limited evidence about the two men's private relationship. (Chapters 235–237)
• Viscount Brahms: Brahms repeatedly pressures Heinrich for rare magic books and finally threatens his life. Heinrich's refusal prompts the attack that Theodore stops. (Chapters 233–234)
