Gordon

Gordon is the merchant responsible for a large caravan crossing the Nadun Mountain Ranges toward Mana-vil. He hosts Vince Haidel and Theodore Miller, then rewards them after their magic saves the procession from a hobgoblin attack.

Biography

Academy, Magic Contest, and National Service

Gordon recognizes the value of Vince's protection and gives the magician and his disciple a high-quality carriage while maintaining respectful, restrained hospitality. When hobgoblins attack, he follows Vince's instructions and witnesses the destructive scale of a veteran war magician. After Theodore kills the chief threatening the caravan's rear, Gordon personally thanks both magicians and gives them an unusual magic-rich berry obtained by his company. He does not know that the object attracted and strengthened the attacking monsters, but Vince recognizes it as a Monster Berry and accepts the gift. Gordon parts from the pair at Mana-vil's checkpoint after offering future assistance. (Chapters 22–24 and 26–27)

Appearance and personality

Gordon is a large, middle-aged man who dresses in a tunic and rides a horse with a glossy brown mane. Theodore considers him a reputable merchant whose courtesy avoids excessive flattery. He is resourceful, flexible in judging Theodore's value, and willing to spend valuable goods to strengthen useful relationships. (Chapters 22–23 and 26)

Magic, abilities, and martial skills

Gordon displays no magic or martial skill. His abilities are commercial and organizational: he manages a procession of dozens of wagons and hundreds of travelers, arranges suitable transport for important guests, directs caravan personnel, and negotiates rewards and future business relationships. (Chapters 22–27)

• Vince Haidel: Gordon welcomes Vince as protection for the caravan and rewards him after witnessing his battlefield power. (Chapters 22–27)
• Theodore Miller: Gordon initially knows Theodore as Vince's disciple but quickly recognizes his value after the young magician kills the hobgoblin chief. (Chapters 22–27)

Items

Gordon gives Vince and Theodore a Monster Berry, a magic-rich fruit that attracts nearby monsters and can strengthen one that consumes it. The berry is company merchandise rather than Gordon's personal artifact and has no planned item article. (Chapter 26)
