Desertio

Desertio is an ancient sand dragon whose approaching death unintentionally turns the Central Continent into the Meuse Desert. Near the end of a life spanning almost a million years, he seeks Theodore Miller's connection to Aquilo so that his Reduction will not scour the continent with fatal heat.

Biography

Eastern Legacies, Quattro, and the Soldun Civil War

Desertio appears near Paracelsus's laboratory and explains that the spreading desert and drought are consequences of his aging body rather than a deliberate attack. Although he estimates that roughly three centuries remain to him, he chooses to die while the rare opportunity for a water dragon to moderate the aftermath exists, framing the decision as obedience to the discipline established by ancient dragon leaders. He is indifferent to the human casualties his death might otherwise cause, comparing humans with ants, yet treats Theodore and Aquilo gently and says he is satisfied with his long life. Before the ritual, he gives Theodore his mythology-rated heart as compensation. Aquilo then performs the Ritual of Reduction: Desertio's body returns to sand and nature, the drought stops worsening, and Aquilo remains necessary to restore the region's water. (Chapters 201–206)

Appearance and personality

Desertio's full dragon form is integrated with the desert landscape, embodying sand and desiccating heat on a vast scale. He speaks calmly and without regret. His courtesy toward fellow transcendents and Theodore contrasts with his remote view of ordinary human life, a perspective shaped by an age in which he has watched, negotiated with, fought, and killed many species. Desertio is a sand-aligned dragon whose weathering body alters the climate around him. His approaching Reduction would release hot wind capable of sweeping across the Central Continent unless balanced by the opposite attribute of a water dragon. His heart preserves the accumulated power and weathering of his life and is dangerous for Theodore to consume at the time he receives it. (Chapters 201–206)
