Commander Benedict

Commander Benedict is the elderly chairman of Meltor's Magic Society who commands the Karul Plains front and gives exceptional operational freedom to Theodore Miller.

Biography

East Continent and the Northern War

Benedict receives Theodore at Karul Plains and deliberately treats him as a captain rather than merely a powerful Prime magician. Recognizing that a master's mobility is wasted in rigid formation, he authorizes Theodore to choose an elite unit and even override the commander's orders. He then lets the young captain train and deploy the smaller force on its own logic, testing its worth at the eastern canyon without dictating its methods. (Chapters 270–272)

During the main battle Benedict directs Meltor's tactical-mage units, adjusts when Andras's titanium shells disrupt their linked circles, and considers entering the field himself when the command problem appears insoluble. Theodore's destruction of the catapults restores the initiative. Benedict later weighs warlock activity, Fermut's threat, and the choice between pursuing elite enemies or advancing on Belfort. When other masters leave to defend Bergen, he remains responsible for the army, ending the arc as its continuing field commander rather than a frontline duelist. (Chapters 274–275, 277, and 283–287)

Appearance and personality

Benedict is an old man whose formal manner becomes stern and dignified in command. He can laugh at an enemy's overreaction and praise Theodore's initiative, but responsibility makes him cautious about surprises that could destroy whole mage units. He values practical victory over personal honor and explicitly tells Orta to use every available means rather than repeat a proud defeat. (Chapters 270–287)

Magic, abilities, and martial skills

Benedict is a senior magician and administrator, but the corpus does not state his circle, attribute, or named personal spell. His principal demonstrated capability is large-army magical command: he coordinates tactical circles, vision magic, communications, reserves, and master-level assets across more than one hundred thousand troops. Tactical spells are cast by organized mage units under his orders, not by Benedict alone. (Chapters 270–275)

He carries or can draw a staff and is willing to enter battle, indicating personal magical competence, but the scene is interrupted before a spell is shown. His article therefore credits strategic and institutional mastery without assigning the combined firepower of Judgment of Eurus or other unit magic to his individual repertoire. (Chapters 274–275)

Relationships

  • Theodore Miller: Benedict gives Theodore unusual autonomy, tests his handpicked force, and comes to admire his results despite concern over reckless methods. (Chapters 270–277)
  • Orta: Benedict consults Orta as strategist and presses him to abandon honor if necessary in a rematch with Fermut. Their disagreements remain professional. (Chapters 277, 283, and 287)
  • Blundell Adruncus: Blundell later assumes chief command while Benedict continues as a senior commander and argues for an immediate advance on Belfort. (Chapters 286–287)

Items

Benedict uses military communication artifacts, vision magic, and a staff, but none is given a unique identity or personal custody history in the supplied link manifest. (Chapters 270–275)
