Sword

Sword is the adaptive weapon given to Shang before his arrival in Aterium. It begins as a black cube, grows by absorbing metal and ore, develops a consciousness that communicates with Shang, and eventually inhabits two weapon bodies at once as his combat path evolves.

History

Gift, first form, and awakening

The God gives Shang a heavy black cube whose permanent form will respond to the weapon he chooses and whose material can improve by consuming stronger metals. During Shang's first lethal encounter in Aterium, his instinctive need for a long, sharp, one-handed weapon makes the cube become a thin, black double-edged sword. That first transformation saves him by impaling the attacking Stalker through the head. (Chapters 6 and 11)

Sword's intelligence develops gradually rather than appearing fully formed. Early in Shang's training it is young, simple, and unable to answer him, but by the end of the Day of Chaos it can speak short words in his mind and train alongside him. Over the following years its vocabulary and judgment improve enough for it to advise him during battles and identify materials it needs. (Chapters 90, 166, and 172)

Ore growth and elemental states

Sword permanently fuses with suitable ore, increasing its mass, durability, and capacity. Its elemental balance matters: the material it consumes can restrict which Mana it carries until that balance is corrected, while damage such as cracks can be repaired through further absorption. Shang repeatedly changes its mass and shape to support distinct Long Sword, Great Sword, Saber, and Colossal Sword combat states. (Chapters 146, 186, 247, 305, 345, and 352)

These forms become part of Shang's developing path rather than cosmetic changes. Sword can hold elemental Mana and release it through its body; Ice can enlarge the blade, Fire can drive explosive attacks, Darkness can interfere with or absorb hostile Mana, and Light supports speed and force. The exact application depends on Shang's current state and on what Sword has stored, so depletion or an unsuitable material balance can remove options during a fight. Two bodies and the last sword

After a later trial, Shang chooses a second black cube and learns that it does not create a second mind: Sword inhabits both the original Long Sword body and the new Colossal Sword body simultaneously. This lets Shang switch between bodies and later fight with both. He reshapes the heavier weapon into Addum, a fusion of Saber and Colossal Sword principles, and creates Subsis as its fast, thrusting complement. (Chapters 606–607, 647, and 664)

When Shang loses his left arm, his two-sword style becomes unusable, forcing the planned consolidation of Addum and Subsis into one final design. The resulting broad long sword alters effective weight through Light and Darkness Mana, replenishes those reserves through a miniature Domain of Entropy, and is usable only through Shang's unique affinities and domain. The narration treats this final weapon as an extension of Shang rather than an independent type; it does not separately establish what becomes of Sword's earlier speaking personality. Abilities and properties

• Sword absorbs powerful metal and ore, permanently fusing the material into its body. More or better material increases its size, weight, resilience, and usable weapon grade, while fresh ore can repair structural damage. (Chapters 6, 146, 305, and 352)
• Its consciousness communicates mentally with Shang, learns language over time, offers tactical warnings, and can control or inhabit two separate weapon bodies at once. (Chapters 90, 166, 204, and 607)
• Sword can store and channel elemental Mana. The carried element changes its functions, but stored power is finite and may be exhausted; its material composition can also make particular elements temporarily difficult to carry. (Chapters 294, 305, 334, and 366)
• The weapon can alter its shape and mass for Shang's successive Sword States. These transformations consume, redistribute, or sometimes burn material, making rapid changes costly until Shang has abundant ore. (Chapters 386, 450–467, and 607)
• The final one-sword configuration automatically maintains Light and Darkness reserves through Shang's costless Domain of Entropy. This design is not generally usable: it depends on Shang's affinities and True Domain of Entropy. (Chapter 900)
