Lucius Volstad's Inheritance Book

Lucius Volstad's Inheritance Book accompanies Lucius Volstad's letter to his successor. Its thousands of pages reduce the extraordinarily complex spell Humanity to instructions that Shang, despite not being trained as a Mage, can understand and activate after a single reading.

History

The Child of Calamity inheritance

Shang receives Lucius's posthumous letter and the associated book as a trial reward. The letter identifies Lucius and Shang as Children of Calamity, explains the link between their growth and the Abominations, describes the Mana and foundation requirements for Godhood, and asks the successor to save Aterium. The book contains the practical tool meant to keep that successor alive: Humanity, the spell Lucius used to hide his true affinity and build relationships. (Chapters 469–470)

Shang reads the enormous manual in a little over an hour. Lucius's explanations convert a Magic Circle too complex for an ordinary person to remember into a structured story of actions, objects, and emotions, enabling Shang to create the diagram and activate Humanity. The spell then runs autonomously with a negligible drain on his mental Mana, allowing his regeneration to exceed its cost. (Chapter 470)

A model for later spellwork

When Shang later studies ordinary Spellcasting, he recognizes familiar runes within Humanity and reverse-engineers Lucius's teaching method. By mapping nouns, verbs, adjectives, and emotions to specific runes and Mana instructions, he builds a framework that accelerates his own Magic Circle work from weeks to hours. The book therefore contributes not only its named spell but also a reusable method of compressing complex magical instructions. (Chapter 528)

The term “Child of Calamity” remains associated with the inheritance in Shang's memory, and he still refers to the book Lucius left behind when discussing what the wider world knows. The supplied corpus does not show the book being transferred, destroyed, or consumed after it enters Shang's custody. (Chapter 534)

Abilities and properties

  • The book teaches Humanity, a sustained concealment spell that lets its user present up to two chosen affinities and prevents even Mage Emperors, beasts, and ordinary humans from perceiving the user's true affinity directly. (Chapter 470)
  • Humanity does not erase circumstantial evidence. Repeated Abomination appearances can still reveal a Child of Calamity, and the spell ends if the user's mental Mana is completely emptied. (Chapters 470 and 528)
  • The instructions simplify an otherwise enormous Magic Circle into a memorable narrative structure. No Comprehension Spell is placed on the book; its accessibility is attributed to Lucius's explanation rather than an automatic understanding effect. (Chapter 470)
  • Shang can adapt the explanatory structure to accelerate unrelated rune and Magic Circle work, though the book does not cast those later spells for him. (Chapter 528)
