Affinity Wheel
The Affinity Wheel is part of the trial system within Shang's inner world. It selects the affinity of simulated warriors and Mages, pairs that selection with other trial categories, and later becomes a reusable source of opponents for unrestricted training.
History
Trial selection and unrestricted access
The trial apparatus first manifests as a purple wheel that selects beasts. When Shang advances to the warrior category, a separate wheel displays elemental colors while another selects weapons; the text identifies the color selector as the Affinity Wheel. Its sectors include common affinities, mixed affinities, and extremely narrow fields for rare powers, making the wheel both a randomizer and an early indication that Aterium's known affinity system is incomplete. (Chapters 197 and 207)
The wheel continues selecting affinities for trial opponents at higher realms, including Pure Affinities such as Space, Time, and Gravity. After Shang's Fusion Realm trial, the God offers permanent free access to the Affinity Wheel as part of a reward: Shang can spin it whenever he wants, train against selected opponents inside his inner world, and resurrect automatically after death there. This removes the normal risk and secrecy constraints from much of his elemental practice. (Chapters 461 and 606–607)
Shang uses that access for centuries to fight powerful Mages and beasts, refine his affinities, and broaden his combat foundation. The apparatus has a ceiling, however: it can summon beasts only up to the Mid Beast Lord Realm. Once Shang approaches and passes that level, most available opponents cease to threaten him, and he judges the wheel largely useless for his later advancement. (Chapters 719, 728, 787–802, and 837)
Abilities and properties
- The wheel randomly selects an opponent's elemental affinity from common, mixed, and exceptionally rare options. In warrior trials it works alongside a weapon-selection wheel; in Mage trials the affinity determines the simulated caster's specialization. (Chapters 207 and 461)
- Its sectors encode affinities beyond those familiar to Shang, including Space, Time, Gravity, and rare mixed affinities. The wheel displays their relative rarity through the width of their sectors, though the corpus does not establish that those widths are exact population statistics. (Chapters 207 and 461)
- Permanent access allows Shang to initiate fights in his inner world without the normal trial schedule and to return after being killed, making it a repeatable training system rather than a one-use test. (Chapters 606–607)
- Its summoned-beast range stops at the Mid Beast Lord Realm. That hard ceiling reduces its training value as Shang's own power rises beyond the available opposition. (Chapter 837)
