Varain
Varain is a Terratrum ruler who exploits the disappearance of three Association leaders to seize their worlds and distribute them for devouring. His consolidation destroys more than forty worlds and makes him the immediate obstacle to Nux's attempt to save surviving populations.
Biography
Building power from abandoned worlds
Varain responds to the Association's sudden weakness as an opportunity. He corners the remaining leader Zalang, offers him two worlds to devour in exchange for submission, and uses the same rewards to gather other followers. The worlds formerly protected by missing leaders become resources; their inhabitants resist for centuries before the last organized world falls. (Chapter 1640)
When the Leander family arrives, Nux charms Varain into revealing that Zalang is already devouring Equatoria and forces him to open a portal with a Void Stone. Once Nux leaves, Varain regains awareness and orders his Ultimate subordinates through the portal, but the Leander women block them. (Chapter 1641)
Vyriana defeats Varain despite his regeneration, speed, strength, and World Shaker ability. His attempts to summon an older leader fail, and she breaks his body into pieces. Ember broadcasts the battle to the Association's remaining worlds, using the sight of their strongest ruler's helplessness to make later surrender more likely. (Chapters 1645–1646 and 1653)
Appearance and personality
Varain is an eight-meter-tall Terratrum whose massive body is made of living stone and earth. He has hollow eyes and a hulking frame, with rock that shifts and regenerates around damage. (Chapter 1640)
Unlike the “muscle-brain” stereotype attached to his race, Varain is calculating, opportunistic, and capable of bargaining enemies into subordination. In battle, humiliation overwhelms that caution and drives him into angry direct attacks. (Chapters 1640–1645)
Abilities and cultivation
Varain is an Ultimate Stage powerhouse and the strongest Terratrum shown. Living rock gives him exceptional defense, continuous regeneration, great physical strength, and unexpected speed for his size. Vyriana lets him regenerate fully between exchanges and still overwhelms him. (Chapters 1640 and 1645)
His World Shaker releases energy on a battlefield-wide scale, toppling armies and turning terrain into a zone of death. It is a crowd-control ability rather than a focused duel technique; against Vyriana it harms subordinates while leaving her untouched. The corpus does not name a Law, Domain, activation cost, or exact range. (Chapters 1645–1646)
Relationships
- Vyriana: Vyriana treats Varain's best attacks as boring, allows his recovery, and kills him once he cannot provide a challenge. (Chapters 1645–1646)
- Nux: Nux targets Varain because his conquests are destroying the worlds Nux hoped to save, then charms him into providing immediate access to Equatoria. (Chapters 1640–1642)
- Zalang: Varain coerces the only remaining rival leader into a pact and pays him with inhabited worlds to devour. Their alliance is opportunistic rather than loyal. (Chapters 1640–1642)
- Ember: Ember uses a broadcast of Varain's defeat to frighten the remaining worlds and reduce avoidable resistance. (Chapters 1645 and 1653)
Items
Varain possesses a Void Stone connected to Equatoria. It opens a portal when the user visualizes a registered destination and supplies Aether; Nux forces Varain to activate it. The stone is not included as a separately cataloged item. (Chapter 1641)
